I have been working at Travis County, Texas (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Travis County is great employer for any stage of your career. Great retirement, good salary for the area, dedicated work force.

    Cons

Some disparity in job titles, salaries between departments when duties and responsibilities are similar. Working for elected officials can be difficult, but sometimes rewarding

    Advice to Management

Communicate better and more often with rank and file. Try to focus on similar goals instead of trying to "one-up" each other .

    Pros

Good benefits, especially retirement. Pay meets average for area which is unusual for a government employer. The County as whole pays good attention to their employees. They want to move forward with their processes as best as possible.

    Cons

All of these comments refer only to my department that seems to still be in the 1900s. They also seem to condone dishonesty with respect to other employees, which bothers me. They want things to be as they have always been and not improve. It is inherent with the type of department in which I work. However, in some areas they actually excel compared to peer agencies.

    Advice to Management

Stop being so inbred. Try to really let processes be managed by those who know them. The practice of asking uneducated, inexperienced managers to flounder in a small but important area as a learning experience is unfair to the stakeholders. You are fortunate that the area is but a small portion of the overall process. However, mistakes can be, and have been, costly.

I have been working at Travis County, Texas full-time

    Pros

    1. Amazing benefits

    2. You get all federal holidays off

    Cons

    1. Salary increases are rare. They are usually across the board for everyone. The best way to get one is to transfer within the county

    2. Office politics. It varies depending which department you work in

I have been working at Travis County, Texas full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The County offers real work/life balance and excellent benefits, including retirement - but also an on-site wellness clinic, a CARE program, and a gym with lockers and showers. Plus, they allow staff the flexibility to use them!

    Cons

There is no budget for coffee or food, so staff pay out of pocket for group lunches or celebrations - and each department operates very differently, which makes it difficult to lead from a corporate standpoint.

    Advice to Management

Every department needs strong leadership and a positive role model, whether elected or hired into their position. This organization is very diverse and tackles extremely important issues. Some processes may need to be updated in order to attract and keep top talent.
