I worked at Travis Perkins full-time

    Pros

Great company to work with. High on health and safety, trained me for forklift.
Very social hours, 7am to 4.30pm

    Cons

Having to work every other Saturday. Although it was only 8am til 12pm

    Salary quite low.

    Advice to Management

Up the salary and I'd be back, you'd get more drivers too. Otherwise you are doing a decent job.

    Pros

Sharesave scheme is good. Room for progression although relevant training is not always given. Can't think of anything else good.

    Cons

Pricing system is awful and staff constantly have to justify it to customers. A lot of the customers can be very rude and nasty. No branches have enough staff. Many staff never get a break. Staff especially managers get far too many emails and too much to do with not enough resources to do what they are expected. Have to work Saturdays. Stocktakes are absolute hell. Audits. I could go on. Too many hours, days too long, have to work xmas, company starting to open on bank holidays now as well. Starting to feel like we work in retail not trade. Computer system terrible. No company backup system in place when drivers are off or lorries off the road which is ridiculous. Too many 'league tables'. Unrealistic targets/bonus. We don't even get a budget for staff events. Very stressful place to work for very little reward.

    Advice to Management

No point giving them advice, they wouldn't listen anyway.

I have been working at Travis Perkins full-time

    Pros

Pretty good job security. Fairly decent wages. Good staff discounts. Pay rises every year with occasional bonuses. Decent hours apart from half day Saturdays. Good job satisfaction.

    Cons

Profit is always at the expense of staff welfare. Over the top HSE. Little discipline from management. Massive divide of us and them between the yard staff and office staff. Yard staff looked down on. No time for personal admin at work. Little teamwork and no quality management plan.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff. Reward good employees and get rid of bad ones! Allow staff to give feedback by having staff meetings. Employ more staff at busy branches as most customers complain of not getting served!

    Pros

Fast progression is possible in this company.

    Cons

Progress is held back by a huge portion of the company being long servers and set in their ways.

    Advice to Management

Try not to let past experience cloud your skepticism for the future potential of the company. Just because you have been successful does not entitle you to success in the future.

I have been working at Travis Perkins full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Knows the business well, been there +30 years, has a lot of loyalty from personnel he has appointed over the years.

    Cons

Not strategic, surrounded by yes men, brought in external people to most of the business unit boards who don't have the same values. Senior management get too involved in operational matters, and drags everyone down.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and not what you managers are saying. If our customers really new what we were like we would have real problems.

    Pros

Mostly good people, beautiful office, good variety of work, parent company is great and benefits are amazing. If you're someone who just wants a 9-5 job with decent people it's a decent place (unless you're in account management, in which case you'll be working all hours and should avoid)

    Cons

Basically they got rid of everyone who ran the place for 20 years who actually valued staff. They brought in someone to 'commercialise' everything. Everyone who works directly for her seems to leave, and the decisions she's making are slowly eroding the family culture (staff she's hired at odds culturally with rest of office, no addressing of You Talk We Listen survey from January, focus on external opportunities/problems significantly outweighs focus on dpd itself). And as far as I can see, she doesn't even have a good grasp of finances. Senior management used to be accessible, and now they're stuck in meetings and not dealing with issues. People have stopped trying to give feedback because it's not appreciated.

The second problem is the new workflow tool they brought in in November. It wasn't tested first, and it makes everything take three times longer than it used to. Account management is struggling and working a lot of hours. A lot of clients are refusing to use it because it's such a headache. The sad part is the issues can be fixed, but the person in charge is insisting it's working or making changes without consulting actual people who use it first. People have given up trying to talk to her about issues because she just tells them they're being negative. System needs a complete overhaul.

Last year, about six people out of eighty people left. In the first three months of this year, eight people have left. I know others who are actively looking.

    Advice to Management

Strip Workfront back, TEST it, become aware of your finances without sacrificing all the people along the way.

    Pros

Pros would be the share save scheme that they operate and the people that you meet within the business

    Cons

The leadership of the company are so disconnected to the reality of branch life, and the industries that they work in.

    Advice to Management

Try asking the people who do the job how to move forward instead of presuming that you know the answers because the truth is in the detail.

    Pros

not having to talk to the people in the office.

    Cons

Don't listen just do what they want to do, bad company to drive for runs done by people who don't know where the sites are.

    Advice to Management

Get traffic planners who know what there doing.

I have been working at Travis Perkins full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Encouraged personal development. The opportunity to run what feels like your own business whilst having all the support you could want.

    Cons

Low staff numbers in store often resulting in periods of lone working which detracts from the customer service experience and uncomfortable for the staff.

    Advice to Management

Need to have a staffing minimum that eliminates lone working as it's not good for customers or colleagues

Proper family type company. They try hard to make you feel valued and train you in the job

    Cons

Not sure management always know what they're doing. Friendly place but can be amateurish
