I have been working at TrustArc full-time

    Pros

TrustArc is an awesome place to work, learn and contribute value.

The company (formerly, TRUSTe) has been in the privacy space for two decades--before it was cool!--and has impacted thousands of businesses' data privacy practices in the process, by providing technology solutions to privacy/legal compliance; certifying practices against recognized standards; and helping companies across industry sectors grapple with cutting edge technology and data privacy-related matters.

The company culture is happy and lively, and very much maintains a start-up vibe while being established and recognized as an industry leader.

And, as an added plus, the TrustArc HQ is located high atop Westfield Mall in downtown S.F. (and thus directly accessible by BART/Muni/bus), and so is great for stepping out for that quick 10-min stroll in the mall or a run to CVS/Beard Papa. This proximity improves one’s quality of life more than you might think!

    Cons

Not much at all. A lot is put on one's plate if they can handle it, so working at the company really requires you, regardless of position, to be organized and stay on top of things.

Substantively, TrustArc is hands-down a remarkable place to apply privacy knowledge/experience and learn in the process. And, the customer base is completely unmatched (Fortune 100 companies through to industry disruptors).

    Advice to Management

Keep it up. The company's talent level is sky-high. The industry involvement (conferences, webinars, survey/white paper publishing, etc.) is stellar. And the suite of technology solutions is best in class, allowing customer companies to automate and operationalize privacy unlike ever before. And the different monthly beer taps for the pre-Giants/-Warriors games are a nice touch too!

I have been working at TrustArc full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

First the people are great, right from the top down.
The company has a work hard but fun culture with a lot of get togethers. Expect to be appreciated for your efforts. There is also a decent work life balance.
CEO and management are transparent and inclusive.
The new assessment manager platform is taking off and it's exciting! Expect to work on some cutting edge technology in the privacy industry.

    Cons

Sometimes there are challenges balancing resources for projects, but what to expect with a fast growing company. There has also been some turbulence with the industry but things seem to be looking up and the company is doing well.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing.

    Pros

If you are interested in the privacy industry, this is the place to be. Within the TRUSTe team, you have access to some of the industry's most experienced privacy experts and everyone shares information openly. This environment promotes learning and growth and somehow still manages to be a fun place to work! The concept of team is huge and I always feel supported.

    Cons

This is a quickly evolving industry; it can be difficult to keep up with all of the changes.

    Advice to Management

Continue the focus on company growth.

I worked at TrustArc full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As mentioned by someone else, unlimited PTO so you can take a month off at a time, a few times a year.

Little or no supervisory oversight. There are no penalties for not meeting deadlines or not completing your work.

    Easy and relaxed environment.

    Job is not hard.

    Cons

Environment is very unprofessional. Goes way beyond "fun tech culture." People play around the whole day and don't get any work done, which is condoned by management.

Whole team is "blind leading the blind." You don't learn much about privacy, except what's in Truste's narrow and very simplistic point of view, which is not applicable to the real complex world of various businesses they claim to help.

Management plays favorites like other reviews mentioned. Obviously sees the few hardworking folks and the folks who do nothing. Yet takes no disciplinary measures as long as you "brown nose."

High turnover and layoffs giving an unstable environment. Yet the most unproductive workers who brown-nose are always kept on.

Heavily sells on "customer service" thinking that this makes up for their lack of substance. Not understanding that clients want real substantive work, not just a friendly customer service rep.

One bad hire leads to more bad hires. Seems to draw a lot of unambitious people that are the same kind.

Management very resistant to improvement ideas from subordinates. Management wants to dictate exactly how the subordinates will work. All ideas to improve efficiency are rejected. Management forces you to do things the outdated ways to keep the status quo. There are a lot of useless and waste of time processes.

No career advancement. You can get promoted to a new, higher title, but keep doing the same job with low or no pay increase. Role is more like customer service, so there is no "up" to go.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people who do the real work when they give you suggestions.

Take disciplinary measures for those who underperform, don't play into favoritism that's not based on merit.

Make products with real impact and real help to clients. Not just a friendly customer service rep.

Train the people on real privacy issues.

No need to hire more people. Just hire better people.

    Pros

TRUSTe has a good handle on the problem space and a jump on the competition as far as their name recognition and solutions are concerned. There are some extremely knowledgeable people on board who have good handle on what kinds of issues companies face as they negotiate the murky waters of international data privacy.

    Cons

There has been way too much emphasis on getting new clients without enough staff to support them, and far too little emphasis on maintaining the relationships we have.

The recent massive uptick in client flow in response to the release of the new EU framework has not been efficiently handled or staffed.

    Advice to Management

Please take the time to recognize that more departments than just sales and GPS have skin in the game here.

I have been working at TrustArc full-time

    Pros

I am really enjoying working here at TRUSTe. When I interviewed, the hiring team was completely transparent about the past challenges the company faced when the EU Safe Harbor was ruled invalid. But they were more excited and confident that the new EU Privacy Shield would change the trajectory of the company. They were right - there is momentum that is tangible and contagious.

In addition, the company has reestablished and enhanced many of their events such as department-organized happy hours, and the annual Giants game. But it’s more than just events - There’s now a team of volunteers who get together regularly to collect suggestions for new benefits, brainstorm and gather training topic ideas, and offer volunteer opportunities. This group is a clear sign that the Leadership Team wants feedback from employees on how to improve the TRUSTe employee culture.

    Cons

I don't really have any negatives that stick out right now. There's still a lot that can be done, and I hope there will be more training and/or education opportunities for employees...

    Advice to Management

    Keep it going. Keep communicating.

    Pros

For the most part, the people there are nice and fun. The culture is collaborative and supportive. It is a great first step into the data privacy world and the location is very convenient. The new SaaS platform is a promising tool for companies to manage their privacy assessments.

    Cons

Like all fast growing companies, there are internal growing pains. Internal processes and procedures needs periodic refinement.

    Advice to Management

    Continue addressing these growing pains.

    Pros

Great benefits, nice office, fun people. Access to tools and training when needed.

    Cons

This company is one of the most unorganized I have ever worked for. There is WAY too much work for the limited amount of people in all roles. Most account reviews and projects are at least 4-5 behind. Employees don't have time to breath during back to back meetings. Emphasis is placed on just getting the work done, as opposed to getting the work done RIGHT. I've seen many of the final deliverables, and I'm embarrassed that they represent our company. There is definitely no pride of quality or ownership of work.

    Advice to Management

Take some time to review the final deliverables that are being executed and given to clients. Take some time to review the actual work load, compared to the people resources available.
