I worked at Tullow Oil full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

At its core, a highly able team which is well trained, objective, and well intentioned.
Some good acreage and interesting projects. The opportunity to move Africa towards a more independent energy future.

    Cons

The introduction of too many processes caused the company to become bogged down and transformed its Headquarters' once independent spirit into an undifferentiated oil operator.

The stratified hierarchy has been disappointing to observe during 2015's restructuring, when there was opportunity for leadership to re-engage with teams at the working level. Unfortunately the executive isolation has continued, resulting in widespread suspicion, employee defensiveness, and company morale at a ten year low.

    Advice to Management

Re-engage with the workforce on a more personal level. They recognise that there are challenges ahead, however they also need to be re-inspired.
Time for Aiden to move on - he has brought little new to the table over the past 5 years.

I worked at Tullow Oil full-time

    Pros

I worked at Tullow Oil in London for almost 6.5 years. During my time there I worked hard, and delivered great results but sadly felt my position and job role on the organisation chart go down rather than up due to the frequent reorganisations.

Unfortunately due to the downturn there is no career progression and projects are slow to move. This is great if you are looking for a job with work / life balance but not so great if you thrive on being challenged.

The exec are very down to earth and approachable. It's not very often you'll come across a CEO who attends an off site supplier with you!

The facilities of the London office are amazing with tea, coffee, fruit etc. The financial package is also fantastic with a great base salary, cash bonus, shares bonus, generous pension and buy one get one free share scheme, 26 days holidays in addition to almost every other Friday off (9 day fortnight)!

If you are looking for a steady job where you work 9-5 then Tullow is the place for you. If you want to work in a challenging role where you will learn a lot then maybe look elsewhere.

    Cons

No career progression but understandable given the company's financials

    Advice to Management

Encourage the managers to really challenge their employees so they can improve their skills. There are a lot of people who are comfortable but not challenged and hence are bored.
