I worked at Twist Image full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You can amass experience in the industry here.
Coworkers and atmosphere are great. Open office concept works well and feels lively.

    Cons

Horrible salaries is a known thing in this agency. They will provide hardware that's a few years old and management seems to not do much to keep their employees.

    Advice to Management

Reward people based on their merits. So many people in this company have been worked to death and provided amazing work, only to have been told they don't deserve a bonus or a bigger raise.

I worked at Twist Image full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They are perceived as a prestigious digital agency with high profile C-Level leaders.

    Cons

Awful work culture and work life balance is frowned upon. It feels like a snotty high school with the "cool kids" picking on everyone else. The less popular people get worked dumped on them while the others play ping pong or go out shopping. Leaving on time is frowned upon even when work is slow. Most of the actually work produced is below par in the industry and they overcharge for it.

    Advice to Management

Clean house and bring in new blood. The long timers are not very talented and are ruining the work environment for anyone trying to come in and shine.

    Pros

    - Great environment and great team.
    - Working hours are usually respected.

    Cons

    - Work lacks creative drive. It's a great workplace but not the best place to build your portfolio.
    - Professionals seen as easily replaceable
    - Business lacks focus. Owners want to make this agency competitive to win clients by hiring a bunch of people from outside and this is drastically changing the company's culture.
    - Strategy first is their moto. This is why their creative work quality is always secondary.

    Advice to Management

With all the changes in team and management you need to protect more your employees.
You did it before and I'm sure you will be able to do it again.
By doing "strategy first" you are creating decks full of words, but with no creative solutions. Make it visually appealing and drop the shenanigans.

I have been working at Twist Image full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - The people at Twist are what make the place truly special
    - Great culture, cool office
    - Solid benefits (including 3 wks vacation to start plus an extra week after 3yrs, 8yrs)
    - If you put in the time, your hard work will pay off and be recognized. This is not a 9 to 5 shop where you punch the clock. Just get your work done and the rest will follow (a good raise, promotion, recognition, etc)

    Cons

    - Sometimes difficult to push changes through. Decisions are made by committee and often times opinions are on opposite ends of the spectrum
    - Project team members are not always accountable for their work and don't care about hitting deadlines (even those that are self imposed).

I have been working at Twist Image full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Great work environment and relaxed atmosphere.
    - Overall good work/life balance. Not a lot of pressure to do mass OT hours for the most part.
    - Cover costs for upgrading skills if necessary.

    Cons

    - Mandatory 9-5 work days.
    - Poor at returning in lieu time for excessive OT (Known of employees who've put in over 60 mandatory OT hours over a short period of time and returned between 1 to 2 days in lieu).
    - Difficult to get the proper hardware or software when needed.

    Advice to Management

    - Be more transparent with employees across the board.
    - Make sure they understand where they can move with the company and with realistic time frame.
    - Most importantly, need to be more flexible with employee hours and understand a better compensation when expecting them to work large amounts of OT to complete a project with unrealistic deadline.

I worked at Twist Image full-time

    Pros

    - The people on the ground (Toronto and Montreal) are great
    - Not too many management levels
    - Company attracts top talent

    Cons

    - Brought in with expectation to lead creative ideation, work on advertising campaigns and new technology. Instead, mostly working on designing Facebook posts and banner ads. No big ideas here.
    - Management expects staff to innovate and generate amazing work that brings in new clients, but this is not encouraged or reflected in the process
    - Partners often talk about new technology, but the internet hasn't been working properly for months
    - Agency touts great environment and modern workplace, yet the work is standard 9 to 5 and the office has had no furniture in meeting rooms for months
    - You are resourced to the brim with mundane work, regardless of seniority level
    - Mostly working on site refreshes, banner ads, little to no work on marketing or advertising ideas
    - Top talent in company leaves after they realize that nothing's going to change
    - Most work is very "safe" and designed by a committee - not a lot of emphasis on creative idea
    - Developers are never encouraged or pushed to deliver quality work. Budget dictates quality so final product is always defective. Nothing widely noted in industry was created or worked on here. Management always shuts down big ideas because they want to be "safe".

    Advice to Management

Talk less about what the employees could be doing better and lead by example. Give developers and creatives freedom to explore new ideas and put their experience to practice. Sell big ideas to client, instead of just managing a client ask and counting peanuts. Let senior people be senior and don't make them do junior work because it's a waste of their time and your money.

    Pros

A large company that is still run like a family.
    No corporate red tape.
    Direct access to the owners.
Room to evolve vertically or horizontally.
    Smart people.
    Great clients list.
    Wide variety of project types.

    Cons

    Rapid growth has its challenges.
Agency life can be stressful at times.
Some clients are difficult to deal with.

    Advice to Management

The management team should continue what they are doing. No company is perfect, but overall, they are doing a lot right to be this successful. They listen to the staff, at least those who speak to them. They reward hard work and don't have patience for those who slack.

Current Employee - Senior Web Developer in Montreal, QC (Canada)

    Pros

    Good client list
Pushes the new media and social media envelope
    Good atmosphere
    Nice location in Montreal
    Interesting projects
    Great team members
Good place to start in the field of digital marketing
Good place to start your professional development

    Cons

    unpaid overtime hours
no possibility to bank the overtime hours
    Disorganized at times
    no opportunity for career advancement
Salaries not up to industry standards
Communication between the Toronto and Montreal offices is sometimes disconnected
    lacking in the recognition
    High turnover rate
    Lack of guidance
    very young project management team.

    Advice to Management

Management should listen to their employees. Twist Image experienced rapid growth (now with 2 offices and 100+ employees) and it seems that the management is still running the place as if it was a small design box. They have very good talent and they should work harder to keep them. They also have allot of young talent that needs professional guidance and training. They don't seem to realize that if they would invest more in their employees, they would get a 10 folds return out of them.
