Great Company to work for (Pre-Elon)

    Dec 4, 2022 - Software Engineer

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Lots of great benefits/expenses (gym, wifi, phone, wellness) - I didn't have to work over the normal 9-5 most of the times - There are a lot of great mentors and helpful people

    Cons

    - I only worked there as a new grad for a year. I didn't really have any huge complaints. Maybe I wish there was a better structure for new grads and onboarding in general.

Sometimes a company can be TOO relaxed

    Sep 16, 2022 - Anonymous Employee
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Iconic tech company that everyone has heard of - Friendly colleagues - Great culture for the most part - Very relaxed; great work-life balance - Nice offices with the usual free food and snacks - Good managers for the most part, but I got lucky

    Cons

    - The culture is maybe too relaxed. There are some very good people at Twitter, but also a lot who are just sitting around collecting paychecks. Was impossible to fire anyone even when they're severely underperforming. - Not very performance oriented, though they're trying to change this. Promotions were mostly based on tenure. - Disorganized, with silos and no clear direction or urgency, and quite risk averse. As a result of this and the other cons I listed above, Twitter struggles to ship. - Kind of high-schoolish. Thankfully I never experienced any beer pong type stuff, but the company seems to celebrate a certain personality type (bombastic and extroverted) regardless of how good their work is. After seeing the same people on stage at company events over and over again, I concluded I was unlikely ever able to rise up to a leadership position here. - Leadership (staff and director level and up) needs to be more diverse. - Lots of splashy and boozy offsites, events, retreats, quarterly planning sessions, but not enough doing. - Of course everything I wrote above is subject to change-- for better or worse-- with Elon in charge

    Fantastic company... before the acquisition

    Nov 14, 2022 - Software Engineering Manager
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Twitter was 100% the best company I've worked for in my career. Management was supportive and transparent. The work was exciting and fulfilling. Work life balance was great.

    Cons

Elon Musk destroyed everything, and the company is now unrecognizable.

Mostly great - just needed better leadership

Nov 10, 2022 - Creative Director in Los Angeles, CA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    • People: The culture is phenomenal. The best people I've ever worked with - talent and personality. • Perks: All around, one of the best places for a good work/life balance • The brand is fun and great to be part of

    Cons

    • Leadership really lacked clarity in where we were going as a company • Very poor management and process - often times too many people on a project and unclear who is approving things

    Culture Torpedo

    Dec 1, 2022 - Program Manager II
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The most capable and compassionate people I've ever worked with. Huge focus on DEI (prior to Musk) Strong core values Excellent company culture

    Cons

Company culture was obliterated with Musk acquisition. Tweeps (Twitter employees), regularly cited the company's Transparency and Humanism as it's strongest attractors -- things not valued by current leadership. High-level leadership and vision have always been poor. Lots of teams going fast in different directions. I would love to have seen what Twitter could've done with the massive talent it hired had there been effective leadership at the helm.

    A toxic wasteland

    Nov 27, 2022 - Data Science Manager
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

It used to be one of the best workplaces in tech It used to be a cultural hub for the world

    Cons

After the merger, it quickly became one of the most toxic workplaces in tech. Deranged midnight emails from the CEO with conflicting information about anything from return to office and being required to fly to San Francisco with no notice so he can personally review your code all the while he hops back on his private jet to fly to Austin. You think he’s going to reimburse you for flying cross country only to find out he isn’t there?

    Pros

The people I work(ed) with were great, now the complete opposite

    Cons

Where do I begin.... Lets start with the new 'CeO' - Crepuscular, Deleterious, Solecistic, and completely inept to what exactly is going on! Ever since 'their' arrival, this company has gone down hill day one. NO leadership skills, NO unity, NO vision, NO principle, NO core value, NO plan, NO risk management, NO change management, NO control. Everything is out of control with this new 'leadership' team. Not only do they NOT know what is going, NONE of them are technical. This is truly the beginning of the end of this company and everyone is jumping ship. Do yourself a favor, dont apply here.
