I have been working at TxDOT full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people, variety of positions open at lower levels, good training, good benefits, good work life balance for most positions

    Cons

Controlling and criticizing management in Dallas District. Favoritism in Dallas District rampant. Mid and upper level job vacancies often decided before job posting - creating bad morale, rumors, etc.

    Advice to Management

Dallas District Admin: Be more open minded in hiring process. Quit openly criticizing employees. Don't judge someone over a mistake or two.

I have been working at TxDOT full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay, no bonuses. Lots of training

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Get more involved with employees training

I have been working at TxDOT as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Steady, consistent work. There is always a project underway.

    Cons

You're at the mercy of some nameless beancounter who evaluates contract costs without assessing the non-monetary value contractors provide. There could be more of an effort to transition contractors/consultants to FTE positions.

I have been working at TxDOT full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great organization to work for. Provides a stable career with interesting work and lots of training. Great place for a young professional starting out. Decent medical benefits. If you work long enough you can expect a pension plan for retirement, which is rare these days.

    Cons

Pay is not as high as competition. Advancements and raises are slow to come by.

    Advice to Management

provide and allow more training for professional growth when the opportunity is there.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at TxDOT full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Best place to learn your job/craft. Everyone is knowledgeable and willing to help, if you just ask. There is plenty of work! Co-workers are very nice. They treat you like your family. Great benefits. Can't stress enough that the benefits are top-notch!

    Cons

Ridiculously low pay. No raises within a year. If you are looking to get rich, look somewhere else. This is a job here you primary concern is to help the people, not yourself. Promotions and raises go through multiple departments; your "manager" simply cannot give you more money. Everyone's hands are tied in this regard.

Work is very slow. Absurdly slow. You don't work for profit. Do the job right, and safely! If you get bored easily, look somewhere else!

    Advice to Management

Management can't do anything. It's simply a system where multiple people have to agree before anything gets done. This is not a con; the system is there because people (in the past) took advantage, and the money that is worked with is the taxpayers. Everything that is done with respect to money is heavily scrutinized.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at TxDOT full-time

    Pros

Overall decent work hours (if you work on certain projects or campaigns it can vary, but you can still earn compensation time), good benefits, fairly relaxed regarding taking time-off, nice co-workers

    Cons

Not challenging unless your work on the engineering side, old-fashioned, no diversity in executive management (old white conservative men) co-workers waiting it out to get their pensions, disconnect between executive management and everyone else,

    Advice to Management

Diversify so you actually represent Texas, encourage the workplace to be less stifling. Create career-plans and growth for junior members. There is no career growth and a lot of managers are stuck on old-fashioned methods of managing their employees in fear that they will get in trouble with executive management.
