I have been working at TxDOT full-time

    Pros

Overall decent work hours (if you work on certain projects or campaigns it can vary, but you can still earn compensation time), good benefits, fairly relaxed regarding taking time-off, nice co-workers

    Cons

Not challenging unless your work on the engineering side, old-fashioned, no diversity in executive management (old white conservative men) co-workers waiting it out to get their pensions, disconnect between executive management and everyone else,

    Advice to Management

Diversify so you actually represent Texas, encourage the workplace to be less stifling. Create career-plans and growth for junior members. There is no career growth and a lot of managers are stuck on old-fashioned methods of managing their employees in fear that they will get in trouble with executive management.

I worked at TxDOT (More than a year)

    Pros

Great Benefits, most of the people there care about their job. Learning new things on a regular basis. Great Job.

    Cons

"good ole boy" system, If you disagree with any decision or haven't been there 10 years your opinion goes out the window.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees like people, not stepping stones. Also Keep your word, news travels fast when management lies about things.

    Pros

I was there for less than a year but during my time there the other employees were very friendly and helpful. Many have been working there for 10+ years.

    Cons

A lot of the tasks were a bit repetitive and often not the most exciting. I wish I could have worked on a project that was more meaningful/challenging.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps you could offer internship positions in different engineering fields/areas. Electrical/mechanical/systems just to name a few. You could also ask for more feedback from the interns on their experience so far.

I worked at TxDOT as an intern

    Pros

A pro of working for the state is that you get a piece of crap state truck, which is cool. Ok benefits.

    Cons

The downside is obviously your salary. You also can't go to lunch with consultants or contractors. You can't accept anything from anybody.

    Advice to Management

Management should attempt to make it less of a competition between coworkers and make it a team effort.
