    Pros

    TxDOT offers a good benefits package, ample vacation/sick time, and a stable job where you could feasibly work for the rest of your working life.

    Cons

    TxDOT, even though a PUBLIC sector company, fancies itself an engineering firm. This having been said, if you are not following an educational civil engineering path you can all but forget about career advancement. Important areas such as IT, accounting, and Business Admin. are secondary and even tertiary to engineering. Also, performance takes a backseat to preference when it comes to fair performance evaluations. If you ask questions be prepared to one day take a knife out of your back.

    Advice to Management

    There is a reason TxDOT is getting such a bad rap and it's not because of the regular employees. Retirees are leaving in record amounts. My advice is just because you have a title does not mean you are ENTITLED. Just like the independent audit stated recently "start rewarding the performers and stop ignoring the problem makers". If, in fact, we are supposed to provide topnotch service to the public, such service needs to start in-house.

    Pros

    They do have good health benefit, sick leave, and vacation leave days.

    Cons

    If you are not an engineer, part of the "good ol' boys or GIRLS club, or related (PROTECTED) by a person in an upper position, you can forget about moving up. TxDOT has the mentality that being an engineer means you can also MANAGE people which is obviously (go ahead and ask any younger to middle-aged NON-engineer and ask them if that's true) not reality.

    Advice to Management

    They wouldn't listen anyway.

    Pros

    Working with the public to help them get answers to their questions and action for their needs when something needs attention on the 80,000 miles of roads maintained.

    Cons

    A great deal of favoritism and cronyism exists while favorites are recognized and advanced and concern for other employees is practically nonexistent.

    Advice to Management

    Cultivate equality of pay for equal work among employees and to encourage supervisors to be more fair and even-handed.

    Pros

    Benefits are provided, a professional attitude.

    Cons

    Sometimes a hard won position can be negated by computer upgrades and you could be sent into a Quota-mad work section.

    Advice to Management

    As long as management continues to work with quotas, quality will ALWAYS suffer, and the efforts of safety-minded data will be tainted.

    Benefits, work-life balance, half hour three times a week to work out

    Cons

    Micro management, inability to be flexible and think creatively, lack of candor, fear-based and reactive rather than proactive.

    Advice to Management

    Let your people have some latitude esp. if they have proven themselves and have great ideas.

    Pros

    The only pro for engineering technicians is job security.

    Cons

    Culture revolves around creating the appearance that everything is working well.
    Clueless management at every level.
    Spineless management at most every level.
    Micromanagement (depends on the office).
    Lack of integrity and ethics.
    Lack of consistency in processes between offices.
    Low pay doesn't keep up with today's cost of living.
    Weak raises.
    Government run.
    Work to pay ratio are too far out of balance.
    Behind the curve in technology though they are trying to catch up (at least the Houston district)

    Advice to Management

    Get a clue.
    Grow a spine.
    Integrity and ethics: learn and apply.

    Good retirement and benefits. There is not much more pros about this company

    Overloading of work, Inefficient work process, Under pay for skill set of employees, insufficient training program
