I have been working at TxDOT full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

On February 25, 2016, the Texas Transportation Commission adopted new values, vision, mission, and goals to guide the department’s strategic direction. The updated strategic direction includes the development of performance-based planning and programming processes, measures, and metrics.

    Cons

learnt new things and challenges through team-building and a review of applicable laws and regulations, sometimes can't get through.

I have been working at TxDOT full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good, decent place to work. Lots Training with emphasis on training, lots of learning opportunities, family friendly.

    Cons

Little passive decision making, little sensitive and negative people. Slow pay rises, Contractors and Consulting Engineers rule the day.

    Advice to Management

Make it stream line and team oriented with good project management and ownership skills as prime goal.

I have been working at TxDOT as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Steady, consistent work. There is always a project underway.

    Cons

You're at the mercy of some nameless beancounter who evaluates contract costs without assessing the non-monetary value contractors provide. There could be more of an effort to transition contractors/consultants to FTE positions.

I have been working at TxDOT full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The hours are great, and the benefits are even better.

    Cons

Not enough pay for the amount of work being done and the availability required.

    Advice to Management

Support and encourage employees by offering a bonus or overtime to obtain a more competitive pay.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at TxDOT full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

M-F, 8-5, teleworking available. Decent benefits.

    Cons

Political, low pay/low raises even when rated "outstanding." Legislators reviewing retirement pension plans (currently defined benefit) - results due 1/2019. Pay close attention, incentive to work for state will be gone if defined benefit removed, considering pay is 20% less or more than private sector and raises hard to come by and often 2%, if that, for outstanding work.

    Advice to Management

Get out of ivory tower and visit the districts often. Listen to field employees, communicate better/more frequently. Value employees. Stop holding raises/promotions for top brass, reward all levels of employees for outstanding work.

I have been working at TxDOT full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great organization to work for. Provides a stable career with interesting work and lots of training. Great place for a young professional starting out. Decent medical benefits. If you work long enough you can expect a pension plan for retirement, which is rare these days.

    Cons

Pay is not as high as competition. Advancements and raises are slow to come by.

    Advice to Management

provide and allow more training for professional growth when the opportunity is there.
