    Pros

This was a great first internship experience. My office put me to work on a construction project, and I was able to get my hands dirty in the field. I got certified in multiple concrete tests which looks great on your resume. After about two weeks, I felt like I was a regular employee. Everybody I worked with was extremely friendly and eager to help if I had questions.
The job is a very structured 8-5 (the hours can be flexible) and the only time I ever worked more than the standard 40 hour work week was if I asked to. I never had to take my work home with me.

TL;DR: Great first internship. The responsibilities given are not too difficult, and the job is very structured.

    Cons

This is a state agency, so of course the pay isn't great. Other offices in my district under-utilized their interns; it is really hit or miss. But, you get out of it what you put in.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at TxDOT full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Agency is better than other state agencies in that employees know from day one that they are an asset

    Cons

Chain of command is more convoluted than other agencies so it can be difficult to know where to go when there are issues....and there will be issues of some sort.

    Advice to Management

Clean up the useless employees from the top down

    Give us something to do.

    Pros

Total environment and very friendly coworkers. Low stress and great hours and benefits.

Pay is very low but that is a state job so the benefits help pick up the slack.

I have been working at TxDOT full-time

    Pros

Overall decent work hours (if you work on certain projects or campaigns it can vary, but you can still earn compensation time), good benefits, fairly relaxed regarding taking time-off, nice co-workers

    Cons

Not challenging unless your work on the engineering side, old-fashioned, no diversity in executive management (old white conservative men) co-workers waiting it out to get their pensions, disconnect between executive management and everyone else,

    Advice to Management

Diversify so you actually represent Texas, encourage the workplace to be less stifling. Create career-plans and growth for junior members. There is no career growth and a lot of managers are stuck on old-fashioned methods of managing their employees in fear that they will get in trouble with executive management.
