I worked at TxDOT (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits and pay are hard to match in the public sector. It's not a sexy place to work, but it happens to be the most progressive government agency I've every been associated with. The people I worked with made it great for me.

    Cons

You have to deal with the many policies, procedures, and politics that come along with government work.

    Pros

Not a one that I an think of.....the only saving grace is some of the people who work there...they are good people left to fend for themselves. No training, no career path nothing.

    Cons

Poorly lead organization with no strategic outlook and an inability to execute due to the relationship with NTTData (a Japanese owned company). The vendor has a captive revenue stream and continually rapes the tax payer with continual up-charges.

    Advice to Management

Quit outsourcing. Get a Strategic leader that is a REAL leader. Let your employees do their jobs. Dont reorg the divisions 8 times in 2 years.

I worked at TxDOT (Less than a year)

    Pros

TxDOT is a very established company, the state takes care of their employees, and I enjoyed being split between the office and the field. The environment was good and my supervisor was very cool and helpful.

    Cons

During the summer, the time I was interning, the hours can be long and though it was not too bad you do spend a lot of time commuting, most of our areas job sites were about an hour and a half away and driving back and forth was a big portion of the day.

I have been working at TxDOT full-time

    Pros

Great learning programs, lots of classes, involvement in large projects and great place to learn overall.

    Cons

Rotation program not working, slow pace (this could be a pro depending on the person)

    Advice to Management

Start making the rotation program work again, this was one of the most attractive features when coming in.

I worked at TxDOT full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most co-workers are very professional, great pay, lots to learn. As long as you don't have to work with a Financial Analyst/CPA at the Greer Building than you should be good.

    Cons

If you get paired with a horrible supervisor than start looking for a new job. I would have wanted to stay longer, but a very close co-worker/supervisor was horrible with people skills. She was not the norm, but I couldn't get away from her fast enough. People actually felt bad for me when they found out I had to work with her.

    Advice to Management

Just because someone sounds convincing when they say the sky is falling doesn't mean it is. Also, if someone has horrible people skills don't give them a subordinate.
