"People are wonderful. I just don't see investments value creation when most of the time is spent managing clients."

I worked at U.S. Trust full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I learned tremendously, always surrounded by smart folk, and great resources. You can study for CFA and get test materials reimbursed.

    Cons

Too much bureaucracy, at times you feel like you're completing tasks just for the process sake. You don't perform much valuations.

I worked at U.S. Trust full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Excellent work life balance. Great benefits such as 3 weeks vacation and 5% matching plus annual 2% 401k company contribution and 3 months paternity leave (that's for dads). Friendly no-jerk culture for the most part (with some exceptions of course).

    Cons

Lack of career path. Extremely difficult for younger associates to be promoted. This is partially just due to the nature of the industry. Lack of training and structure. You get what you put into it, but you could potentially just do busy/clerical work for many years. While there is an almost unparalleled work life balance, the pay is pretty sad at least for anyone lower than VP. Due to these issues, there is a large amount of turnover and the firm constantly loses its best and brightest associates to other firms and management doesn't seem to care (seen as expendable).

    Cons

Sometimes do not have too much to do. Waiting for people to offer me work or something to do.

I have been working at U.S. Trust full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good life balance, and decent benefits

    Cons

Underpay. Surprise to see how little PM 1s and PM 2s are making, which implies my future at this place is dim.
