I worked at UC Davis as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

I don't want to give away the department I interned for but I got great hands-on experience with data analysis that I would have never learned in lecture-based classes. My mentor (who was a graduate student) was amazing and very career-oriented, focusing on our personal goals and what is the next step for us.

    Cons

Minimal interaction with the head professor. I found it bizarre that didn't meet the professor, who was supposedly in charge of this research, until a year after I started the internship. No salary either.

    Advice to Management

    Pay your interns!

I have been working at UC Davis full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I have had the opportunity to meet many wonderful and dedicated employees who are hardworking and passionate about UC Davis.

    Cons

Senior management treats people like a number. They preach a culture of growing their own talent but do not follow through regardless of how much initiative you show.

    Advice to Management

    Practice what you preach.

I have been working at UC Davis (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent preparation if you want to teach in higher education; many opportunities to develop teaching skills. Tuition and fee waiver and health insurance are great benefits

    Cons

Not great path if you want to go into industry

    Advice to Management

Incentivize professors to do a better job mentoring and developing PhD students.

    Pros

    Coworkers are friendly
Free food if working the closing shift
Easy to get as a first job for a student

    Cons

Don't always follow your restricted hours (could conflict with classes etc)
Student Managers were sometimes rude (to the point it made me leave)
Career Managers look down on you from other departments

    Advice to Management

Respect the people who are working hard to keep the Silo clean rather than leering at them
Listen to your employees and allow them to expand and move on

I have been working at UC Davis (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent Benefits, Most Colleagues are Pleasant People, Beautiful Campus, Highly Ranked Research University, Team Building Atmosphere (depending heavily on the department), Paid Holidays, Opportunities for Training and Work-Life Workshops, Access to Resources and a Large Network, Post-Probationary Job Security.

    Cons

Low Salaries Relative to the Job Market, Slow Job Advancement, Highly-Bureaucratic Job Hiring System, Recently a High Turnover Rate, Work Culture Changing Rapidly, Recent System-Wide Policy Updates (creating a lot of red tape for standard business functions that would be much easier and more efficient in the private sector), Additional System-Wide Updates that Appear Efficient on Paper, yet Create More Daily Time Inefficiencies for each Staff Member (ie. new time sheet logging and bi-weekly pay system).

    Advice to Management

    -New Emphasis on Manager Training
-Increase / Return To: investing in current employees. The turnover rate has seemed to skyrocket recently, which creates a general inefficiency due to the imbalance in the time it takes to train the revolving door of new team members.
-Balance the university culture by promoting internal upward mobility (in tandem with the current focus of attracting new specialists from the private sector).
-Increase the efficiency of the Employee Hiring System, and emphasize realistic expectations of the process to external applicants. Certain jobs have been posted several times, showing that there are either realistic expectations in the job description for the salary range, or that the automated system is filtering out candidates based on trivial keywords.

I have been working at UC Davis full-time

    Pros

Great training for all interests......even outside your career field. Good benefits and flexibility along with great purpose.

    Cons

Pay is horrible compared to like state jobs not at UC. They offer decent salaries to new hires, but do not appreciate long standing employees with lots of experience, comparable degrees and working knowledge.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate, recognize and offer competitive salaries for existing employees. Do not rely on July performance reviews to determine increases.

    Cons

I worked at UC Davis full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of nice people, great location (especially for a family), good benefits, pretty intellectual community, lots of diversity, healthy living (super bike-friendly town)

    Cons

Can be a bit boring, perhaps a bit under-rated, probably not great pay unless you're a high-level administrator, academic mindset can be stifling sometimes

    Advice to Management

As a public university in California, I think it's important for the high-level leaders to pay more attention and take cues from the stakeholders that aren't necessarily making decisions every day (students and the public).

I have been working at UC Davis full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of student activism addressing a range of on campus and off campus issues. Really talented students. Lounges are filled with students studying

    Cons

Political challenges and at times upper administration is afraid of confronting and or listening to the students. Need to open doors more to students.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to students more.
