I worked at UC Davis part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get to work with your fellow aggies and some truly exceptional staff.

Possibilities for management experience and hiring experience

    Low oversight with high responsibility

Easy to get from your job to your classes and visa versa. Extremely flexible hours

Possibility for advancement and connections to staff for lateral movement into a career position (if interested and exceptional)

Potential to work closely with executive staff on a regular basis.

    Cons

    Low pay

    Often required heavy lifting

    Advice to Management

My manager was an angel, however her meetings tended to drag on due to their infrequency.

I worked at UC Davis (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great staff. Good pay. Good benefits.

    Cons

Failure to classify employee according to university job specifications. Top heavy administrators who care nothing for the staff employee. Staff not considered an asset. Employees fear job loss and thus will not report law violations which occur way too often, especially at the administration level. Supervisors and higher staff can do not wrong. ADA and EEOC violations occur too often. Cover-ups rampant at any management level.

    Advice to Management

Treat staff better. Stop law violation cover ups. Cut excessive non-essential managers and supervisors. Stop wasting money. Classify employees correctly. Stop disability discrimination and other forms of discrimination such as race and age discrimination.

I have been working at UC Davis part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As a graduate student employed as a teaching assistan, I enjoy riding my bike to and from campus and the perks of working at a university - sitting in on interesting lectures during my lunch break, enjoying the student union and the student recreation area.

    Cons

The administration of my department is extremely slow and I feel like I have to double check constantly that things my lab need from them do get done in time. Not the fault of individual employees though - they have been really understaffed for over a year now.
