    Positive Outlook

I worked at UC Hastings College of the Law part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Got to learn the inner workings of how legal librarians deal with research and basic maintenance of a library.

    Cons

I'm disinclined to speak ill of a former employer.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I worked at UC Hastings College of the Law full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

UC Hastings is a decent law school, and has a diverse student body. It is in downtown San Francisco, by City Hall.

    Cons

In the Tenderloin, a crime-ridden part of the city. Security does the best they can, but it is not in a good part of town.

    Advice to Management

The school should stop lowering its admissions standards. Doing so is a Faustian bargain. It is no wonder that bar passage rates and school ranking have dropped in recent years.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at UC Hastings College of the Law full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Diverse student body and workforce. Friendly working environment. Excellent clinical law opportunities for students. Low key, professional work environment.

    Cons

This "standalone" law school is underfunded. The State of CA has cut back its financial support in recent years, and the cutbacks have resulted in unfortunate strains. Also, law school is not in the safest location, but law school makes every effort to protect its students and staff.

    Advice to Management

Try to find non-monetary ways (permit telecommuting where possible, etc.) to benefit staff, if financial reality constrains ability to increase compensation.

I don't have any negative things to report.

  5. "Lecturer"

I have been working at UC Hastings College of the Law full-time

    Pros

Collegial atmosphere all around you. Motivated students. Great location in the center of the city. Respected as lecturer -- less hierarchy than at other schools. No complaints at all!

    Cons

US News ranking has been slipping, which has taken too much of our attention. Too much focus on Bar pass rates. School is somewhat behind the eight ball when it comes to strategies for working with underperforming students.

  6. "Good place to work"

    Pros

Good people overall, convenient location, low risk

    Cons

    Slow decision making, finances tight

    Advice to Management

Keep listening to staff and investing in technology

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at UC Hastings College of the Law full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Employees at the upper levels have a fair degree of autonomy. Casual work environment. Interaction with students a plus.

    Cons

The law school faces tight budgets, declining rankings, and declining student enrollment. Key personnel in at least 5 administration offices have left in the last year, top profs returned or switched to higher ranked schools and the dean stepped down shortly after renewal of his 5-year contract. Employee morale at the lower levels is poor.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to keep top talent.

  8. "Great students and faculty"

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at UC Hastings College of the Law (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Terrific students, supportive administration. The administration treats adjuncts well; as an adjunct for the last six years I feel part of the law school community.

    Cons

I love the students and the school environment or I wouldn't keep coming back year after year!

    Advice to Management

Continue to support faculty and staff; they provide a great learning environment for the next generation of lawyers. Continue to admit a diverse and creative first year class each year.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at UC Hastings College of the Law full-time

    Pros

    Good benefits.
    Good academic dean (Beth Hillman);
Good staff (not faculty), though see cons.
Generally, easy job w/ 9-5 hours.

    Cons

Really terrible management culture. No room for growth.
Not raising sufficient funds to support the school. Often bailed out by state.
(Most) faculty don't care about the students or the institution as a whole.
(Many) faculty members are leaving for other institutions.
Huge numbers of staff have been leaving for elsewhere. This is evident in the number of positions available through internal hiring. This has impacted staff attitudes for the last 2-3 years.

    Advice to Management

Function like most other Universities, hire a business-oriented operating staff, and listen to them. Faculty should stick to research and teaching.

    Cons

location in the Tenderloin, noisy and sometimes sketchy.
