I worked at UC Irvine Hospitality and Dining Services full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was hired for the opening of the new "Anteatery" dining facility at Mesa Towers. This place has an endemic problem with cleanliness and following basic food handling standards including but not limited to hot food items being held below 100 degrees and not being properly reheated among other things. Employees religiously wear gloves but I never saw an employee wash their hands. Also, facility has been open for just over three months and already most of the equipment looks years old due to lack of cleaning/maintenance (dirty stoves and grills and 2 main hood systems already broken). However there is free sort of food, great benefits for non student employees and high wages, all the Mountain Dew you can drink. Student workers tend to be very friendly and fun.

    Cons

Extremely Rude/unfriendly NON-student workers. Inability to maintain a clean kitchen environment (hoods not wiped down, grills catching on fire due to excess grease buildup, and who doesn't foil the drip tray?), untrained and ill prepared management, no employee orientation unless you got hired the same date as the employees who were hired to open the facility, despite being paid $16 plus an hour most employees barely know how to hold a knife let alone effectively use it, the head "chef" is soooooo burnt out he looks like someone who just got in a car accident...dazed and out of sorts. Local Aramark management is woefully untrained.

    Advice to Management

Train and orient your employees, clean your kitchen daily and respond to employee concerns

    Pros

    Nice atmosphere, fast paced environment

    Cons

Aramark, the parent company, is absolutely terrible.

I worked at UC Irvine Hospitality and Dining Services (Less than a year)

    Pros

It was convenient working on campus because I didn't have a car at the time of employment. Gain customer service experience.

    Cons

Hours are sparse and shifts are short because of class schedules. Student location managers leadership styles not effective to keep morale and productivity high. High employee turnover rate.

    Advice to Management

The process of promoting / hiring location managers needs to be reviewed. The leadership at the location I worked at could not adequately manage the personalities of the team or delegate work effective.

    Pros

literally just good for students to get paid while at school. on campus jobs are easy to get to and do not require a lot of stressful work

    Cons

there is a lot to not like here. there really isnt anywhere to go up. management is disheveled and turns an eye to certain employees

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Free food during breaks, relaxed workers and management, nice environment. Very flexible because its an on campus job.

    Cons

Sometimes students are overworked when it would be much more efficient to have two workers at a station. Not much training or organization. Lack of positive feedback from management.

    Pros

Good benefits. Free food. The work demanded is not too hard. Mostly just part time food service work. Customers are easy to deal with.

    Cons

Can get hectic during busy hours. Sometimes management does not know what to do. If you dislike getting messy then this job is not for you.

    Advice to Management

Train employees more thoroughly so they can handle tough situations and won't always have to come running to you. Be more prepared.

    Pros

Free food. Able to create close relationships with your fellow coworkers who eventually may even become life long friends. Managers are also pretty flexible with your schedule, so can work around your classes and outside school activities. You also have the chance to move up if you want

    Cons

Well it is physically exhausting at times and can even be a little boring if you're working when there's not a lot of customers around. Can be a strain if you have midterms/finals but still have to work
