I worked at UC Riverside (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible with time. You receive training from supervisors or fellow employees and asking questions are encouraged.

    Cons

Can get tiring physically (like any other dining work)

I worked at UC Riverside full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Allows for somewhat independent thought, although not much. Benefits are ok, could be better. Some departments are not sexist. Good bus service.

    Cons

If you don't have a PhD your ideas will be dismissed, and then called brilliant at another meeting when a PhD suggests the exact same idea.

    Advice to Management

    Get over yourselves.

I worked at UC Riverside full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Definitely a lot of benefits no matter what role you play, you can thank the union for that. As with many academic environments the work environment can be fairly laid back, with very flexible hours. Summer are particularly laid back.

    Cons

Academic environment is fairly laid back, but there can be a fair amount of bureaucracy in between you and getting the job done, which can cause many frustrations.

    Pros

    - Development of nanostructures based ultrasensitive and highly-selective sensors to identify and quantify Air Quality Index.
    - Expertise in synthesis and characterization of inorganic materials and polymer composites for the applications in energy storage including Li-ion batteries, supercapacitors and Li-air batteries.

The Ph.D. experience in UCR trained me to be a good engineer and researcher in nanotechnology-enabled sensors and energy storage devices.

    Pros

Decent equipment and passionate students. Nice campus with good food options. Buildings were well maintained most of the time.

    Cons

Poor accounting left graduate workers missing checks or paid wrong amounts regularly. Weird funding regulations meant that fees were paid in often questionable ways. Very little accountability on professors or administration

    Advice to Management

Please focus on updating your policies regarding funding and fees. Provide more recourse for graduate students in negative environments. Offer support systems through counseling and information.

    Pros

The student body and some of the faculty and administrators who spend the time developing meaningful relationships with grad students.

    Cons

Some departments, such as my own, have professors and administrators who are awful to deal with. There's also often no system for checking who gets what teaching assignments and that there is equity. In turn there was not equity.

    Advice to Management

Develop a way to make sure TA ships and summer teaching assignments are distributed equitably. Do not place administrators with no oversight in charge of distributing such positions.

    Pros

Great place to work. Workers were very attentive and willing to learn. The managers there are more than ready and willing to help you to succeed. They also work with your school schedule

    Cons

Some times the work schedule puts you on a late night shift depending on your department. But other than that it is an awesome place to work

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. Excellent staff and moral are key to happy employees . You all are doing a great job
