I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

They have the best infrastructure for researchers and good events for postdocs that want to transition to industry

    Cons

The typical slow process on getting things approved.

I worked at UC San Francisco full-time for more than a year

    Pros

UC postdoc union is working to protect people's right and it is big enough to negotiate some good terms, e.g. parental leave

    Cons

OK working environment, limited and weak career support and career development. UCSF is not taking care of its people. Pay is not good, but the pay for my position is controlled by NIH as well, no supplemental compensation and it costs a lot to work there. and considering it as a state run non-profit organization, its Housing service seems to be making money, instead of providing support. Rent is high as compared to stipend / wages.

I worked at UC San Francisco full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

It's hard to find pros, I can think only if you have no options and ucsf is the only option, unless you are looking for a green card.

    Cons

So many of them, better do not start, most of so called science is a joke, PIs chasing funding game.

    Advice to Management

No advice because no one will listen.

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

UCSF has a good benefits package for postdocs. The health insurance and dental plan are decent. Although the work environment is something that changes from lab to lab, in general, the work atmosphere is chill. Most PIs don't control worked hours and researchers have a lot of freedom. UCSF also has a really good infrastructure with clean and organized buildings. Work culture is also hard to describe since it will also depend on your lab/department, but in general people at UCSF tend to be progressive and friendly. UCSF is also regarded as a top research institution, which will guarantee you to have contact with top professionals in your field.

    Cons

The worst part of working at UCSF as a postdoctoral researcher is definitely the salary. The base salary makes it almost unfeasible to live in the Bay Area. As in any academic environment, there are cocky and sassy people, and one can expect to spend some energy dodging some people's egos.

    Advice to Management

Management should consider offering better career plans for researchers with a data science background otherwise people will inevitably drift away to industry.
