I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Good benefits
-Not too stressful. There's a lot of work, but there are so many mediocre people here, that just showing up means you're a good employee.
-Once you're in the system, it seems like you're preferred for a lot of other UCSF jobs.

    Cons

-Horrible HR. Slow and get the final say on everything.
    -Low salaries compared to industry/private.
-Lots of turnover in some departments. I worked in two different departments and never had a direct supervisor last longer than 9 months. They either leave for other UC jobs or for industry because salaries are so low here. This means that you can never be sure the tasks you're responsible for today will be your responsibility in a month, or if you'll have additional duties on your plate. You sometimes get a stipend (a raise if you have a good dept) for additional duties, but more often not. Which leads me to...
-Heavy workload for not that much money.
    -Top-heavy.

    Advice to Management

-Hire fewer managers, more low-level staff.
-Pay fairly, especially when people take on more work.
-Offer more skills development training for staff. *Hard* skills, not seminars about mindfulness/diversity/de-stressing/etc.

    Pros

Benefits and retirement plans are good and the opportunity to be involved in meaningful work.

    Cons

No training, gossipy environment, condescending employees with big egos.

    Advice to Management

Provide your new hires and employees with training and weed out the toxic people who gossip and are condescending.

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pros: world-class scientists, excellent technology, attention to professional development.

    Cons

Compared to similar-level universities (e.g. Stanford): rigid hierarchical structure, especially in medically-oriented departments. Remarkably little collaboration; some labs unnecessarily competitive to the point that it interferes with scientific advancement. Some professors give little freedom to their lab members. Promotion, especially from postdoc to faculty, often appears to depend on personal connection to a big-name professor and not on the relevant skills. Diversity is celebrated on paper, but faculty in the vast majority of departments are not diverse at all.

    Advice to Management

Promote collaborations! Give collaborative grants, establish centers, etc. Hire diverse faculty based on their scientific acumen, not connections.

I worked at UC San Francisco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good Benefits. Steady work. Good wellness program. Amenable to training.

    Cons

Stiff hierarchy. If you accept a job as Analyst 1 it will be an arduous road to making it to the next level. UCSF really needs Analyst 1 people, and it can take many many years before you can move ahead. Advice: avoid the Analyst 1 title, when accepting a job.
