I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pros: world-class scientists, excellent technology, attention to professional development.

    Cons

Compared to similar-level universities (e.g. Stanford): rigid hierarchical structure, especially in medically-oriented departments. Remarkably little collaboration; some labs unnecessarily competitive to the point that it interferes with scientific advancement. Some professors give little freedom to their lab members. Promotion, especially from postdoc to faculty, often appears to depend on personal connection to a big-name professor and not on the relevant skills. Diversity is celebrated on paper, but faculty in the vast majority of departments are not diverse at all.

    Advice to Management

Promote collaborations! Give collaborative grants, establish centers, etc. Hire diverse faculty based on their scientific acumen, not connections.

    Cons

the practice mangers think they are Nurses, just glorified secretary with big ego, totally unprofessional, they treat staff terrible

    Advice to Management

Get a Clue, UCSF was the wordt environment, management stinks. you can only transfer out to another Job if they are in a good mood, no room for advancement. they want your Blood in these practices, no matter what you do it's never enough, even if you work 200%, they will find one thing wrong and Blow it out of proportion, so you don't score high and put it on your written evaluation.

    Pros

mission-driven organization, great people, top notch faculty and staff

    Cons

low pay, bureaucracy, finance system, work-life balance

    Advice to Management

Consider work-from-home options, more flexibility with work schedules, judge faculty on people management as well as publications, increase pay. This title is really that of a project manager but is re-titled so they can pay you less.

    Pros

Opportunity to work with multiple departments and cutting edge technology, with field leaders and experts. Opportunity for growth as long as you seek it! Leaders in science and medicine but

    Cons

Everyone except (science related positions) seems happy with their pay?
I always feel like I'm missing a few zero's at the end!

    Advice to Management

If you want to retain talented personnel, PI's can always give bonuses and supplement salaries. Not even the most dedicated can live on a post-doc salary for long! If they leave and it's not about the money.....it's because they're hungry!
