I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time for more than a year

    Pros

equal opportunity, active research environment, excellent alumni resources, tons of collaboration opportunity, bay area location, mature tech transfer mechanism, smart and diligent ppl to work with

    Cons

locate in san francisco so the living cost is pretty high. biomedical focused university, so culture wise is not diversified. postdoc activity/community is kind of weak.

    Advice to Management

enhance campus shuttle system, increase gym and other facility quality, help to build a more interactive and strong postdoc community

I worked at UC San Francisco full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great to network in the UCSF community. Great to learn new technical skills. Great to have a career office.

    Cons

Postdocs receive less wages than technicians. Their assignments are sometimes technician level, and not much possibility to (first author) publication. Overseas postdocs on visas have not much choice but go back to home country if their situation is not as great as they expected it.

    Advice to Management

Please give postdocs a better chance for advancement.

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Working with world class researchers is an amazing experience. I could not have benefited more from being in such a wonderful research environment.

    Cons

Direct University support for people outside senate track faculty is hard to come by. This leaves middle career researchers in a constant hunt for funding to maintain their own salaries. Postdoc pay has improved, but still has a long way to go to get to reasonable levels given the cost of living in the area.

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great health benefits. Very high level of science. many sources of career advise. Many opportunities to learn new stuff. Collaborative spirit

    Cons

Young PIs will tear Phd/Postdocs apart in hard work. Very senior ones are mainly politicians, rather than scientists. Expectations for work hours is 10-15 hours a day. Many work over weekends.

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The science is incredible, the researchers are top notch

    Cons

UCSF regards postdocs as disposable cogs in a wheel, make sure you have a good PI, not much support otherwise

    Advice to Management

Support your postdocs better, especially clean up HR where postdocs are concerned
