I worked at UC San Francisco for more than 3 years

    Pros

The work experience of the postdoc will vary depending on the Primary Investigator researcher. It is important to know as much about the Primary Investigator as possible such as publication record and how postdoctoral fellows are developed in the lab. UCSF is a great institution with a lot of support for postdocs whether it be teacher development or knowing how to begin startups. There is also a great number of fellow postdocs that can be helpful.

    Cons

There is a five or six year limit to the postdoc position at UCSF or other University of California for that matter. It is important to finish papers and projects within three years.

    Advice to Management

It is important to treat and develop postdoctoral fellows because these same researchers will impact academia as well as the biomedical industry in the future.

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pros: world-class scientists, excellent technology, attention to professional development.

    Cons

Compared to similar-level universities (e.g. Stanford): rigid hierarchical structure, especially in medically-oriented departments. Remarkably little collaboration; some labs unnecessarily competitive to the point that it interferes with scientific advancement. Some professors give little freedom to their lab members. Promotion, especially from postdoc to faculty, often appears to depend on personal connection to a big-name professor and not on the relevant skills. Diversity is celebrated on paper, but faculty in the vast majority of departments are not diverse at all.

    Advice to Management

Promote collaborations! Give collaborative grants, establish centers, etc. Hire diverse faculty based on their scientific acumen, not connections.

I have been working at UC San Francisco for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great expertise, open community, postdocs finally got a reasonable raise, thank you Obama, no thanks to UC system who tried to fight the long overdue raise to just above the poverty line.

    Cons

As a postdoc, be careful of who you select to be your advisor. Work-life balance should not be expected.

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Apart from being one of the best institution to pursue a career in research, UCSF has a great atmosphere of collegiality. It's fantastic to be surrounded by experts in the fields who are willing to share, help and collaborate.

    Cons

Postdoc renumeration is barely adequate especially for an institution located in one of the most expensive cities to live in in the United States and the world.

    Advice to Management

Housing in San Francisco is extremely expensive. Without adequate renumeration, it is becoming unaffordable to live in the same city as our campus. UCSF should have more housing available or supplement housing cost for postdocs.

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Many research and career opportunity. Top notch science. No doubt on this.

    Cons

Too, Too expensive living in bay area. Postdoc salary is not affordable to postdocs with family. Due to 1-year contract renewal system, international postdocs need to apply visa stamp every year outside US (need travel) and therefore limited to attend international conference.

    Advice to Management

Should increase salary for postdocs. Multiple year contract. These two make UCSF more attractive to potential postdocs.
