I worked at UC Santa Barbara full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Location is great, some motivated students

    Cons

pay not enough to live well in region, some departments brush sexism and anti-semitism under the rug - hard to say if this second part is specific to UCSB

I have been working at UC Santa Barbara full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good graduate program at Chemistry & Biochemistry Department. Various research opportunities.

    Cons

The department could hire more staff in administration. It seems like they're doing too much tasks with small numbers of staff.

I have been working at UC Santa Barbara part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Free Housing and Meals (17 meals a week at any campus dining common)
    -Met many great friends
    -Job experience
    -Event planning and coordinating
    -People skills

    Cons

-I personally don't think we are paid enough for what we do, they say that it makes up for it with housing and meals. Understandable, yet nothing can really prepare you for this job as it will always be different.
-Deal with heavy issues (mental health-related), as well as lighter issues (roommate conflict), and somewhat medium issues where practice helps (resident transport due to alcohol poisoning).

I worked at UC Santa Barbara part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Interesting work, in your field (physics is mine), better pay than most, flexible hours

    Cons

Unlike many school jobs, all paid hours are work. In a desk like job you may be able to get homework done, but not for grading.

I worked at UC Santa Barbara part-time

    Pros

UC Santa Barbara is by far one of the best institutions you can work for. The benefits are great, the people are wonderful and very passionate about what they do.

    Cons

If you aren't a professor or department chair the pay generally speaking isn't great. The benefits and work-life balance do make up for it though. There also aren't a lot of opportunities to grow within a department but you can most definitely transfer to another as with many other companies they prefer to hire internally.

I have been working at UC Santa Barbara full-time

    Pros

Everyone I have worked with here has been friendly and easy to get along with. Of course, there is cutting edge research with an abundance of highly regarded researchers.

    Cons

It has been hard for my union to bargain with the UC administration - not a lot is done to ensure that employees are paid fairly and taken care of here.
