I have been working at UCB full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Many opportunities to learn in various scientific areas, no silos.
    - Space for ideas and improvements
    - Good work/life balance
    - Friendly atmosphere

    Cons

    - Senior management is not inspiring, poor scientific guidance
    - Lack of consistency and use of best practices, too many decisions driven by outdated historical practice and not data
    - So called risk-based approach means lots of shots to the moon without thinking ahead first

    Advice to Management

    - Surround yourselves by passionnate and smart people
    - Take more time to build a strong base for projects, rather than wasting time sticking the pieces together after a failure

I worked at UCB as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great place to work. Treat you from the beginning like you're part of the family.
Well-equipped laboratories and a diverse set of skills between the scientists.

    Cons

Standardisation of the placements would be great. However, this turned out to give some flexibility to the students and really allowed me to exploit all the knowledge the different teams had.
"What you put in is what you get" with UCB, and this should be a great placement for a sandwich placement student.

    Advice to Management

At the time, Brussels was getting too much attention and Slough deserved greater emphasis.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at UCB full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits and work/life balance

    Cons

Constant change of direction. Waste resources performing analyses of what is wrong just to do nothing afterwards. Does not walk the talk. Promotions are not based on performance but on set numbers per department

    Advice to Management

Address the issues found during the numerous analyses of the business, rather than do nothing and embark on another analysis that mobilises all the resources 1 or 2 years after the last one
