    Positive Outlook

I worked at UCLA Extension part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone in my office was very friendly and helped me get accustomed to my position.

    Cons

It's not on the UCLA campus and I didn't have a car, so it was about a 20-30 minute walk to work after class.

    Advice to Management

Be more flexible with student schedules.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at UCLA Extension full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, very stable, incredibly hard to get fired, and fulfilled my personal mission to work in education making people's lives better

    Cons

incredibly hard to get fired (misdeeds, abuse of other employees, poor performance, etc. is rarely punished), poor pay; little room for advancement past front-line management

    Advice to Management

reward good performance, pursue ideas that further the mission instead of management's comfort/ego, use evidence-based decision making, learn how to communicate with all employees, invest in some management training

    Pros

    Pros

    The students; always a pro!

    Cons

Terrible hours, abysmal conditions, awful pay. I don't know why they force students into this system, and it is unfortunate that this is one of the few jobs for PhDs.

    Advice to Management

    The system is broken.

I worked at UCLA Extension (More than 3 years)

    Pros

UCLA Extension provides an outstanding opportunity for professionals to to share their expertise with students, and to learn from the students as well. I would highly recommend UCLA Extension to potential instructors, as well as professionals who want to take classes for a range of certifications.

    Cons

There are no negatives based on my experience. I learned as much from my students as much as they learned from me. It was a mutual mentoring opportunity.

    Advice to Management

Continue to recruit working professionals who work in diverse jobs. This is what makes the experience rewarding for UCLA Extension students.

I worked at UCLA Extension part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Some nice teachers and students

    Cons

No health benefits, low pay, no guaranteed hours from quarter to quarter

    Advice to Management

I have been working at UCLA Extension full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible with time-off procedure, genuine people that really care. The continuing education culture is encouraged, great resources to learn from

    Cons

Since it's truly difficult to be fired here once you become a Career Employee, some employees/departments proceed at a snails pace, not efficient and "Pass the Buck" mentality can exist here. Since last year we hired a new Dean Smutz and his new vision and style of leadership is something that I appreciate. We will see how his vision and plans are carried out this year. Pay is minimum.

    Advice to Management

Provide an environment that encourages personnel to grow, develop, and not micro-manage.
