I have been working at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

business growth with the new mission bay hospital that, amazing to contribute to the mission of the organization of expanding health care and the work we do for patients

    Cons

opening of the hospital has left some areas vulnerable as they have not grown to support the organization. this has lead to lack of support and / or the ability to not have the opportunity to do your best which is disappointing.

I have been working at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Patient population/Research/Growth/Teaching hospital/Location/Benefits and pay

    Cons

Union/lack of passion and accountability due to comfort in unionized positions.

    Advice to Management

If turnover is high on your unit think bout root of cause as lack of positive role models and examples. Real time correction and zero tolerance for clicks may greatly advance the practice. Diversity in personal creates a healthy and productive approach to patient care. Stop trying to create clones. Clones are more prone to cancerous growth.

Generous base hourly, adequate staffing, good retirement benefits, 12hr shifts, diverse staff, pod system (usually 3 RNs to 4 patients = each pod can cover its own breaks internally while remaining within CA state mandated ratio laws), PRIDE acronym, 403B plus 457B

    Cons

Disappointing Long Term Disability coverage, 9% of gross salary deducted (pre-tax) for mandatory UC Retirement Plan contribution.

I have been working at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent Benefits. Have Health Flexible Spending Option (FSA) Available during open enrollment. Strong and affective union representation for represented classifications.

    Cons

At the staff level you can get trapped into a low paying position. For me it has been a very top-down and rigid structure. There is very little opportunity to grow your skills on the job to advance yourself. Training and skill building options available through Human Resources are almost nonexistent at the staff level. Once you are at management level there are lot's of resources and trainings available.

    Advice to Management

Build a way to grow skill and upward mobility into the corporate culture of the organization from the staff level.
