RecommendsI have been working at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals full-time for more than a year
Pros
Brilliant minds. Good benefits (healthcare and retirement). Mission Bay is gorgeous
Cons
SF is a very expensive city and difficult getting between campuses. If you have kids getting into daycare (especially at Parnassus campus) and affording it as well is extremely difficult. The salary is not much different than at other academic sites in other cities with far lower cost of living.
Advice to Management
Better support for junior faculty / staff with young families.

Pros
large company, good benefits, good diversity
Cons
you can't get anything done because there's always someone higher up and someone higher than them who needs to OK the littlest things. There's no communication between departments and its a headache to be an employee who wants to make a difference and care about the job

The salary was great and the perks that come with the job are nice. Good benefits. Some departments have a better "culture" than others.
Cons
Being such a huge institution, it is very bureaucratic. There are a lot of communication failures.
Advice to Management
Give employees a track towards moving up.

Pros
Good benefits. Retirement benefits after you are vested five years in. Can work in other state departments as a UCSF contractor (e.g., state public health). Don't know much about working at UCSF proper; just at state dept. I have also appreciated that they have been very vocal in support of undocumented students during the current attacks from the White House.
Cons
Travel reimbursement process is cumbersome and bureaucratic
