I have been working at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I have been working at the UCSF Cancer Center for 8 years and love it. They truly put patients first and care about employee satisfaction. Pay and benefits are great. Days can be challenging at times as this can be a high volume clinic with sick patients so we expect excellence. There is upward mobility- I started off as a per diem MA and worked up to MA Supervisor. Management truly tries to make sure everyone’s... voice is heard.

    Cons

Can be a sad place to work since dealing with cancer patients you end up connecting with on a personal/friendly level. I try to see the positives and feel lucky I can be part of their journey as this may be one of the hardest and scariest times in their life.

I worked at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great benefits. Overall friendly colleagues. Great vision/mission.

    Cons

Management could learn a thing or two from the diversity training and conflict management training UC offers. Due to increasing administrative burden on all medical center employees, the workload can become extremely demanding and unfortunately, management does not care or compensate well for time and effort. Furthermore, despite taking initiative, management does not promote growth for its staff.

    Advice to Management

Work with your employees. Listen to them and promote their growth.

I worked at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

In my experience, management cares about you and works with you in career advancement opportunities. Teamwork oriented with many friendly faces! Great benefits

    Cons

Of course, as with any institution, there are some managers that create stressful and unhealthy work environments for their employees. Parking almost impossible to get and very expensive.

On the outside a great organization to work for great benefits but once you get in you may find yourself unhappy with the way things are run. No work life balance at all and little flexibility.

I worked at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great benefits, you directly effect patients and their families by explaining and resolving hard to understand situations. You can really make a difference in patients lives.

    Cons

Too much red tape. There are many unions which means there are two types of people working there....entrenched employees who sit around all day doing no work and the other employees who do ten times the work (who make the difference in people’s lives). This leads to bad morale and extreme burn out. Plus, the rumor mill and gossip run rampant and with the no cost of living increases and bonus programs being done... away with, the morale plummets to toxic.

    Advice to Management

Stop playing favorites with employees and hold people accountable. I’ve seen bad people kept on the payroll for years because they were someone’s pet, while over performers with actual numbers to back that up—were “laid off” or “let go”. Also, you must leave your position in the department to get a higher paying job. Very rarely are you prompted from within.
