      Pros

There is no shortage of interesting cases. No call or weekend work....yet!

      Cons

Employee parking is over $4000 a year. Carpooling is impossible since management requires rotation to different sites. UC shuttle times don't work with our work schedules so you're forced to pay for the expensive parking. Sounds incredible but its true. They don't provide an annual continuing education allowance. Employees are required to pay 9% of their salary into the Pension. Union dues are high, roughly $160 a month. . The work environment is you're viewed as a "nurse hourly employee". If you're coming from a different area of the country, don't be fooled by the hourly rates--factor in parking costs, pension contribution, no yearly education allowance, union dues and cost of living in SF,

      Good ratios and union support

      Pros

Although a busy and full hospital, staff are some of the best you’ll ever work with, the union is strong and works to support its nurses, and they work hard to try to preserve state ratios

      Cons

Hospital is always full and ER cannot function like it is supposed to. Most days the entire ER is admitted patients waiting for a bed, and the 30 patients in the waiting room have nowhere to go. Upper level management is often unrealistic about the daily functions of the hospital, and have made some tone deaf comments regarding real life patient care. Luckily this seems not to trickle down. Those of us in the trenches know what really goes on and how to handle real time issues.

      Pros

Lots of opportunity to grow. Can move to different departments with little to no experience.

      Cons

Parking is expensive. Depending on department you may be dedicated to work weekends until you build your seniority.

Great Benefits and Time Off Perks

Aug 14, 2021 - Patient Care Assistant (PCA)
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

The pay at UCSF as a PCA is great and way better than what it has been at any previous employer. We also have the perk of creating our own schedules and requesting time off is easy, which is really important for me as a student. The environment is excellent as well, many great nurses that are actually very helpful when it comes to turning patients, cleaning and all other ADL's. It is an environment that pushes you to be excellent and I really appreciate that. There are also great benefits at UCSF including retirement plans.

      Cons

The work of a PCA can become very stressful when we are short-staffed because you will have a larger patient load. You are still expected to meet all patient needs in a timely manner, but there is much help from nurses so it is bearable.
