I worked at UMB Financial Corporation as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The internship offered me many opportunities to meet leaders at UMB and to talk with people who worked in areas of the company that were very different from the one in which I was employed. There's an emphasis on placing people in the company based on their personal and professional qualities and interests and how they will fit in with the rest of a team. Successful interns have the opportunity for permanent placement. If I had wanted to keep working with the company, I could have done so. I probably would have wanted to move into marketing—the marketing people seemed driven and energized.

    Cons

UMB has a very conservative company culture—you'll be expected to wear business attire (men: suit and tie, women: think pantyhose), and the corporate latter is fairly rigid. You'll be very aware of the hierarchy of power and responsibility, and some of the older higher-ups aren't the most welcoming to younger employees. I found the pace of work pretty slow and was often bored, but I can't speak for areas of the company other than the one in which I was interning. Some people might find my description of the company culture to be more of a pro than a con. A lot probably depends on whether that's the right fit for you. It wasn't for me, but if you want a very traditional work experience, this is it.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the young people in your company. Some of the most creative, productive, interesting people I met were part of a newly formed group of young professionals who were trying to organize a network of millennials at UMB and around Kansas City. They made the office a less sleepy place.

I have been working at UMB Financial Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Leadership starting to feel aligned at mid to senior level.
    Transparency is increasing.
Front line associates are thought about first to ensure equality on decisions made at top of house.
Finally wanting to listen to front line and regional management verses previously aggressive top down approach.

    Cons

    Lack true leadership/coaching development training.
    Lack strong mentoring program.
    Lack strong career development program.
Some knee jerk reactions on operational things that cause the pendulum to swing quickly one way or another.

    Advice to Management

Invest in longer term impact coaching/leadership training at all management levels.

The front line wants to see you, it is welcomed to come into a banking center and say hello.

    Pros

The vision, values and attention to the customer.

    Cons

Internal talent acquisition is horrible. If you are applying for other positions in the organization you are easily ignored and left in the dark. There needs to be a clear service agreement on the time line and actually followed/managed. "Moving quickly" around here is really a 6 month situation.

    Advice to Management

Realize your employees want to stay but allow them to advance into other roles easily.
