I have been working at UMB Financial Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Low stress, Great PTO flexibility, Diverse, good benefits for 401K, health, HSAs

    Cons

Little communication on major projects from senior management, office environment is "clique-ey" and difficult to establish relationships with people who already work there if you're new, fluctuates between very very busy, to extremely slow, much time wasted on useless and unnecessary meetings, limited in opportunity for career advancement other than through an accounting role

    Advice to Management

Limit meetings and do not make them so frequent.

    Pros

Great people. Lots of training available.

    Cons

Pay was not great. Very conservative bank which made it hard to lend in a smaller community.

    Pros

Structurally - broken down into small teams w lots of emphasis on team unity and mutual respect. Managers are on balance are very aware of the individuals on their team, individuals are given room to work in a manner that maximizes their potential.

Upper management has done an excellent job of considering aspects of each individual business unit that lend themselves to employee friendly policies. For example in offices where in person contact with clients is unusual casual dress is normally allowed.

    Cons

A small minority of managers struggle to give individuals the space to excel at their job. This lack of patience and tendency to micro manage leads to a negative feedback loop that radiates outward and hurts others outside of that managers direct team. This is however the EXCEPTION to the rule!

    Advice to Management

Empower mid level managers a bit more. Up the level of accountability of these managers for the production, happiness, and overall success of their team.

    Pros

Great opportunity to collect a paycheck, gain access or remain in financial services industry. Plenty problems to be solved because of poor system integration.

    Cons

Small minded environment and extremely conservative, behind in technology, lack of diversity on all levels and forms, and more importantly, just a old school organization operating like it is the 1960s. Constant turnover because of quirky culture, very similar to Stepford Wives, Smallville USA and NASCAR all wrapped up.

I have been working at UMB Financial Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

UMB is a great place to learn and grow, as advancement is encouraged by management. If there is something you want to learn more about, they are all about coaching you and developing you. A lot of the positions are considered "universal banker" positions where you will be both a teller and a personal banker, so cross training is necessary. This allows you to have more knowledge about how the bank works from all sides. You will be more likely to have round table meetings with upper management here than you will with other companies. Many times our upper management has organized these meetings to hear what things are truly like on the ground level so that they can meet the needs of associates. You will not have to worry about not being able to advance if your position leaves a need at your branch, they will promote you even if they can't replace you at the time.

    Cons

While the cross training is helpful and enlightening, it can be overwhelming at times. It doesn't allow for breaks in between helping customers at the desk and helping customers behind the teller line, so staying organized can be difficult. While UMB is overall a great company to work for, it lacks severely in the tech side of banking. We still use (in my opinion) an unreasonable amount of paper documentation in our filing since our systems are so behind. Also, at the beginning of 2017 they finally re-released their mobile app after problems kept it out of the game for a few years. This all comes back to the fact that their teller/banker systems are extremely dated, which limits any other technological advancements. Policies change like revolving doors, but major changes (like new computer systems) take years to ever change/take effect. While the advancement opportunities at UMB are great, they tend to leave branches in need of management/employees because they will advance associates without having anyone to replace them. They are also hesitant to hire which means you may be dealing with the skeletal crew at your branch for extended/indefinite periods of time. But, unfortunately, this seems to be the way that all/most banks are headed anyway.

    Advice to Management

Be present. Don't forget about development just because the tasks pile up. Encourage your associates daily.
