I have been working at UMBC full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Nice surroundings, tuition remission, lots of vacation and holiday paid time off, telework available, free downloadable software, nice food court, gym use for staff too.

    Cons

Support staff have little opportunities to career advance, top Administrative staff get raises; however support staff told no monies available for raises. Causes huge gap in pay between top Administrative and bottom support staff.

    Advice to Management

    Be fairer with raises.

I have been working at UMBC as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    True public service work
    Empowering oppressed populations
    Educational Award
    Training

    Cons

    Disorganization
    Low-pay
    Many hours
Not enough training/prep for year after service
Upper management positions are filled with young professionals = not much room to move up

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent about upper management roles to AmeriCorps staff so they can learn more, and engage in the work you're doing. Including Fellows in your work gives them true experience and understanding, while also allowing for them to plan for their career after year of service.

    Pros

Good employee benefits under the Maryland state system.

    Cons

Grant-funding limited and research is defined by a clear statement of work with deliverables so that other basic exploratory research may not be considered. This, of course is grant specific and does not apply to all areas of research existing in the university community.
