Pros
Great place to work and the job comes with a lot of flexibility
Cons
Postdoc research associate pay is not high
- Former Employee, more than 3 years★★★★★
Pros
Very flexible work schedule. I was a student and was able to get valuable research experience working on cutting edge projects.
Cons
Research work can come in waves and it can be difficult to schedule work around class and test schedules. It always depends on whose lab you work in so be sure to ask questions before you start working.
- Current Employee★★★★★
Pros
Great work-life balance and very supportive and collaborative research environment.
Cons
Underpaid. However it is not just UNC-Chapel Hill, it is for postdoc and RAS everywhere,
- Current Employee★★★★★
Pros
Active and innovative research community
Cons
There is no engineering school. Med campus is detached from rest of school
- Current Employee, more than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
If you get a good research lab with a friendly environment it can be amazing.
Cons
Some labs may differ in pay and in-depth search is needed to find a good fit.
- Current Employee, less than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
The university has good research facilities and work environment tends to be good
Cons
Core facilities are too expensive, there needs to be a better communication between faculties to identify common research areas and join forces in proposals
- Current Employee★★★★★
Pros
NC has great weather and Triangle research area is developing fast
Cons
There could be more support to international students
- Former Employee, more than 5 years★★★★★
Pros
If you're considering a postdoc at UNC it's likely because there's a great department or research group you want to work with. UNC has some of the best talent around and it's great to be part of it. You'll get great benefits (awesome health insurance) and pretty good pay. Beautiful campus with lots going on.
Cons
Things can get pretty bureaucratic, like any large university system. Don't expect forms to get processed quickly.
- Current Employee★★★★★
Pros
Benefits and compensation are competitive. I work offsite so my experience is a little different and I don’t interact much with the campus/administration side. My department has clear objectives and my research team is a great group of people to work with. Transparency in work expectations is also a plus.
Cons
Parking is atrocious if you work on campus.
- Current Employee, more than 8 years★★★★★
Pros
UNC is among the top ranked universities for research and is an ideal environment to learn to perform good science. Experts from various fields can be found on campus and are usually approachable.
Cons
Once you have a position, it is a long and tedious process to climb up the ladder. Salaries are low.
