    White supremacy culture & mediocrity

    Jun 28, 2022 - Deputy Director
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Depending on the team and type of work you do, the organization offers flexibility for parents and caregivers.

    Cons

White supremacy is embedded in every aspect of how this organization is managed. From the hiring practices, to the groupthink, the board, the partners, the priorities - it’s subversive and the folks who have worked there for a long time are mediocre at best. It’s a toxic place for women of color - at all levels - and the majority of the C suite is while, cisgender, male, and heterosexual. Middle managers are abusive and there is a culture of power hoarding. There are very few role models and anyone who is an exceptional employee leaves. There are many VPs who should have been fired for misconduct or lack of performance a very long time ago. There is very little critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and the skills that are most prized are one’s ability to shmooze powerful white people for money. There is a performative commitment to racial justice. The salaries are so far below market rate that it attracts folks who come from immense privilege or have other means to pay their bills. It’s shameful and perpetuates deep inequity. The only way structural change can happen in this environment is to replace the CEO and phase out many board members who keep the organization back.

    Pros

    - be part of Unicef's mission to protect children around the world - have the chance to work with teammates who are committed and compassionate

    Cons

    - constantly changing priorities makes is hard to make real progress - lack of focus and prioritization leads to too much work and burnout

Good people, unimaginative and unimpressive leadership

    Apr 30, 2022 - Anonymous Employee
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good people who care about the mission Some really great, empathetic, hard-working people who all leave due to either the salary or being fed up of the culture Majority of people seem to be there for the right reasons

    Cons

    - Leadership is incredibly slow moving, can’t make a decision, and is allergic to innovation or thinking outside the box - Leadership just hires people who are yes people - I don’t believe even one non-white person works in the executive office - CEO is incredibly stubborn and also robotic. Is completely unreachable so from afar he seems like a deeply apathetic person. Can’t imagine he cares about children, if he doesn’t even care about the people he supposedly leads - pay is bad and you are not promoted based on how well you do or how much work is thrown at you - extremely hierarchical structure. If you’re comfortable just writing then following useless procedures, putting whether it works or help anyone aside, this is the place for you! - hypocritical rules, put on a huge front of immovable rules that are ignored whenever the board wants something
