I worked at UNICOM Government part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people to work with, great managers, training from partners that work with the company, training from seasoned representatives

    Cons

    Opportunity for growth is slim

I worked at UNICOM Government (Less than a year)

    Pros

This company can give you a lot of exposure to interesting facets of business, especially if you're interested ni mergers and acquisitions. The pay is decent for an entry- level role.

    Cons

The CEO is very hard-working but micro manages to the point that you wonder why he hires people to fill any of the other executive roles. I would equate the growth path to climbing a cliff (it is possible, but you will need to teach yourself everything). Expect no training in the business side of he company.

    Advice to Management

There definitely needs to be a better training program that equips the interns to start as full-time employees. Then there should be a more clear path for advancement within the company, so that we don't resort to Google to try and cater to the CEO's ever changing demands.

I worked at UNICOM Government full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The commute is convenient, as they are close to Dulles Airport, so driving from MD, DC or parts of Northern VA are a "reverse commute" against traffic coming to DC. Great benefits, 401k is OK, training and certifications as needed. Diversified also.

    Cons

Salary reviews were scheduled, but reflected the state of the company, industry and market. For key areas, the compensation was fair, but on the low side.

    Advice to Management

There was a complete change of senior staff/execs every 2 - 3 years as failures to deliver or meet corporate goals seemed to lead to quick radical changes, not focused leadership.

I have been working at UNICOM Government full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good people, pay is reasonable, benefits are reasonable, work load is manageable

    Cons

Leadership has been decimated by attrition. We have good people thrown into roles they were not meant to have, and no vision or goals coming down from the top to guide us.

    Advice to Management

No sense in giving advice, it would not be heard by the people who need to hear it. The people who would hear it are doing the best they can with the authority they have to make things happen.

I worked at UNICOM Government full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company I worked for was bought by Unicom. I've heard nothing but good comments about Unicom

    Cons

The structure of the company in the West Coast I feel needs more direct supervision

I worked at UNICOM Government full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent Employment culture of respect and ethical behavior
Upper Management mixing with all levels of employees
    Company Sales Meeting
    Engagement
    HR Incentives and Health Programs
    Online Health Programs
    Bonuses / Incentives
    Merit and Performance Rewards
    Excellence Recognition

    Cons

More recognition for spot bonus awards based on "above and beyond" performance... employee of the month, Star Awards, etc.

    Advice to Management

Keep Employee Retention as a priority

I worked at UNICOM Government full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Relationships and the people I worked with

    Cons

Poor executive mngt; lots of golden parachutes for undeserving and underperforming leadership.

    Advice to Management

GTSI doesn't exist anymore and Unicom is a microcosm of what GTSI used to be. Lots of institutional knowledge walked out the door in past few years.

Also, business model of "value added reseller" just doesn't work. Bundling "services" around product sales was a recipe for disaster and huge liability for GTSI for years.

    Pros

Good atmosphere with co-workers and nice facilities.

    Cons

Sr. Management focused on "self" rather than people or a clear vision

    Advice to Management

Listen to your line workers and mid-managers

I worked at UNICOM Government full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people were great. They were like family and I feel like I grew up with that company. I look fondly at my years there.

    Cons

There wasn't a sense of making sure that upper middle management was on board with the vision the executive leadership was planning and coaching with the lower middle management and the managers to be.

    Advice to Management

Tweak the Human Capital approach. There was too much cross talk among what appeared to be a lot of bureaucracy.
