I worked at UNITE HERE full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and good pay - parking reimbursements for downtown.

    Cons

Leadership lack of knowledge in running a successful business

    Advice to Management

Great union internationally- I am very loyal to the labor movement and UH international- but local leadership is very interpersonally invested with their own agendas and make decisions based on their own profit rather than the overall good of the membership.

    Pros

It is very rewarding work as you learn how to become an organizer and the staff really cares about their workers

    Cons

Long hours, pay, and they need more staff of color.

    Advice to Management

    Hire more diverse people

    Pros

Amazing, talented, committed people and a fantastic organization, if a bit small.

    Cons

The projects are difficult and success is rare.

    Advice to Management

Stronger, better management is always good. Managers get promoted because of their skills, not because of their management abilities, which leads to neglect.

I worked at UNITE HERE full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are wonderful and committed, inspiring, diverse, and fighting to make a better world and a better labor movement. The benefits are excellent. Leadership skills are prioritized and people who aren't good at leading other people generally don't get promoted. In the city where I was located, everyone had a lot of fun together at work and out of work.

    Cons

You need to be pro-active about making time for yourself that you need, as in most mission-driven work. If you struggle with this, you will struggle here. It's a scrappy place and I think people who are happy here generally enjoy jumping in and getting your hands dirty with whatever needs to get done. If that bothers you, you will be endlessly frustrated. If you don't want to be married to your work at least somewhat, this is probably not a good fit (in most positions--some admin positions are different and have more work-life balance).

    Advice to Management

Keep working, keep fighting! Let's keep prioritizing promoting women and POC to leadership--I like the direction things are moving but we need to do it faster.

    Pros

It was a good job for a long time. I got to help lead lots of good fights for workers rights and the pay and benefits were good.

    Cons

Crazy hours. Chaotic internal culture with lots of infighting. Poor workplace stability.

    Advice to Management

Provide some more union democracy and foster a broader range of workplace leaders.

I worked at UNITE HERE full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, real interest in developing employees' skills, opportunity for promotions, opportunity to travel, meaningful work, very hands on, etc.

    Cons

The hours are very long. Management uses this as a badge of honor to push their employees instead of trying to instill a good life/work balance. If you work for the international, you will also end up traveling a good deal.
