I have been working at UPS part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay but it is rare to get more than about 20-24 hours per week and the union gets some of that money. During 'peak' season you will get A Lot of hours, and you may struggle to rest and recover adequately. You will get Exercise. Depending on your level of fitness, you may require a lot of time to recover. Benefits are good but you must tolerate one year there to become eligible for benefits.

    Cons

Unreasonable expectations - they want humans to work like machines; go faster, do more, faster, faster...oh and be safe in a building that is always a dehydrating sweatbox. It is often difficult to move packages quickly because there are many of them and they often weigh over 100 pounds, yet they expect clear walk paths at all times; even when there is no place to put the packages. They expect package handlers to do a lot of work as fast as possible then drivers are upset by inevitable 'crazy' loads. Package Handlers are rushed to finish quickly, often leaving drivers with disorganized loads, so the drivers then spend a lot of their day rearranging their loads; and the drivers make a lot more money than package handlers make. UPS is full of 'time eaters'. 'Time eaters' that remove you from your work occur daily and take anywhere from about 5 minutes to 30 minutes or more and only mess up your process, because when you are not doing your work, your work is not getting done. Short meetings occur daily. Longer meetings include surveys, training sessions and other windbaggery. They care about worker injuries because injuries can cost the company a lot of money.

    Advice to Management

Downsize package volume per vehicle to enable swifter flows throughout the whole process; and utilize more smaller vehicles that can get in and out of more neighborhoods more easily than large vehicles can. Modernize Everything. Don't throw the word 'logistics' around; leave the comedy to professionals.

I have been working at UPS part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, Monday-Friday work shifts, education reimbursement, 401k matching, PTO. Safety is a top priority.

    Cons

Limited advancement opportunities once you get to the management level with UPS. Most of the management team has a negative outlook in general and closed-minded. Very little recognition for meeting or exceeding expectations, but you are always made aware of your mistakes, shortcomings, or just not being what your direct boss wants (even if you get the job done).

    Advice to Management

Take into consideration that everyone is not wired the same way and do not hold that against anyone. There are multiple ways and methods to being successful and getting the job done.

I worked at UPS full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive benefits with a lot of room for advancement. Focused on career development. Opportunities to work with others on projects.

    Cons

    60+ hour work weeks
Due to downsizing, what was once 5 people's job is now 1 persons
    A lot of useless meetings
Having to work in several locations, my home base was moved 3 times, with my last base being almost 50 miles away
    Little to no training
Industrial engineering is fun, the rest of the company was not

    Advice to Management

Hire more people to split the workload more evenly or reduce the workload. Working a 50+ hour week with 10+ hours of travel is tough.

I worked at UPS part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A lot of potential for teaching you a management skillet at a big league employer. You are in the belly of the beast and other employers will see this and pick you.

    Cons

    • Cut-throat management (treated like garbage for not hitting impossible numbers)
    • You are not allowed to move back to union positions such as Brown-Truck Driver due to your nonunion position (I was denied for 3 years and my friend had less time(reg package handler union employee) at UPS- he was given the position I was trying to get)

    Advice to Management

Don't let your part-time supervisors fall out due to your internal issues with union/non-union attitudes. A good worker will always be a good worker, especially if that worker came from a position of high standard already. You churn out part-time sups because of these issues.

I have been working at UPS part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Salery is okay for bigger

    Cons

    hours are terrible every week

    Advice to Management

Hours are terrible when I apply they told me school is important to them but never really cared if I had to do homework, supervisors are terrible at their job always want the younger people to do everyone's work to do other people's truck because they are lazy Terrible hours when I applied they said you get 5 hours every day 25 hours a week I was lucky when I got 15 hours most of the time I only did 2 hours a day.

I worked at UPS part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Plenty of room for growth

    Cons

Pay is unacceptable. Minumium wage paid to people sorting packages up to 70lbs, 100 cases a minute and same pay to person taping up broken packages. System of pay is flawed, no incentive to stay when people realize this. Very poor supervising. No recognition of strengths and weaknesses in individuals. Everyone is seen as equal which unfortunately does not work.

    Advice to Management

Plenty. I have been a supervisor for 30 years in various fields. My advice has widely been appreciated by corporate management on how to fix small to large issues.
