I worked at UPS part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Pay for school
    Amazing health and dental benefits
    job security
    upwards mobility

    Cons

Work culture due to union and management conflicts

    Advice to Management

Hire more qualified part time Supervisors. The strength of the Union is really strong and I believe so does the front line supervisors have to be as well. Huge turnover rate due to employee packages being better than supervisor packages and not properly training part time supervisors.

I have been working at UPS part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good benefits and great hours

    Cons

Only 1 single 10 minute break regardless of how many hours you work in a day. Sounds pretty shady, right? Yeah. It is.

Everything is your fault. Don't meet production on your shift even though you did exactly what you were told.

Your job basically consists of asking hourly, union, employees to work faster, which they are under no obligation to do. When they don't work faster you are told that you don't know how to do your job. Sometimes you are asked to "demonstrate" to employees who have been there 10+ years. Union rules state that as management you are not to do any work, so you are supposed to tell someone to step aside so they can watch you as you demonstrate, which they often will not let you do. So, you are *wink wink* asked to demonstrate, which means you need to work, but you weren't exactly told to work, but you know that that's what your boss wants you to do. Then when you get filed on for working management does not have your back, and instead will suspend you.

No training either. You aren't told how to manage people. You are taught how to fill out paperwork, and that's basically it. Management barely knows how to manage the other part-time managers.

There is so much micro-management going on here it will make your head spin. Ever had 4 different people telling you 4 different, contradicting, things to be doing at once? That's just another day here.

As management, you aren't even allowed to make any management decisions. You are there to be told that you are not doing your job. You will have a radio strapped to you so that these lovely reminders of how terrible you're doing can be shouted into your ear by every upper-management person under the sun.

Employees will not listen to you, because why would they? There are no repercussions for their actions. They walk out when they want, or don't do as you ask them? Your fault.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with respect, and trust. There's a reason that the turnover rate for this position is through the roof.

I worked at UPS part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -good benefits
-hard to get fired if you've been there a while
-drama from stressful times does not last over a day, people reset the next day
    -paid holidays
-great tuition assistance program that pays over $5000 that you're eligible for the day you start work!

    Cons

    -low hourly pay
-not enough hours per week to live on
-high expectations from management, they measure brand new employees to seasoned employees who have been with the company 20+ years
-they have been hiring and promoting a lot more females than males. Females have extremely bad attitudes when asked for help.
-No career advancement, jobs are reserved for single moms over people with education.
-number of years with the company far outweighs any advanced degree or work experience.
-drivers make way too much money, often blasting music on expensive portable speakers in the office
    -treating customers poorly is encouraged
-promised career advancement with my Bahcelor's degree. I applied to over 30 jobs and wasn't even contacted to interview for any
-unprofessional language that would not be tolerated in any other corporate environment
-union workers are invincible. they set bad examples for new drivers and it drags down the culture
-people who bring personal issues into the office are often in higher regard than hard workers who keep their personal lives separate

    Advice to Management

culture needs a revamp, it's not okay to have a bad attitude about doing your job. Get rid of the union, the workers have nothing to fear and as a result they do and say as they please. Recognize people with education, UPS could really use it!
