I worked at US Airways full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, positive culture, profit-sharing bonuses (which I think are going away, sadly), fun industry, good camaraderie

    Cons

"Training" is sink-or-swim...basically nonexistent, so if you're new to the airline industry, the learning curve is going to be steep, confusing, and at times demoralizing. Although people are friendly and management is accessible, some groups can be cliquey. Lots of old-timers who still lament the US Airways-America West merger. US Airways runs a very "lean and mean" operation--you basically have to be a senior director or higher to get a company-paid stapler, for example.

    Advice to Management

Institute better training programs for new hires in HQ positions.

    Pros

    Flight Benefits and decent coworkers.

    Cons

Long hours and horrible pay. Management does not care and won't train you properly. You'll be left to teach yourself and when you are confused they will get impatient.

    Advice to Management

    Practice leadership

I worked at US Airways full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Demanding job with dynamic environment. If you want to travel and do something different almost every day, the engineering department is the place to be.

    Cons

Work can be very stressful during mergers. Political environment can sometimes get into solving underlying problems. Wages are not that high as competitors, but that may change with merger with AA.

    Advice to Management

Employees have worked very hard to make a successful merger with American Airlines. Don't forget them and make sure that the profits and benefits to all employees are in par with what upper management got out this deal. It is sad to see how the CEO's package is almost 400 more than what the average employee makes.

I have been working at US Airways full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

As an airline employee you get severely reduced cost scheduled flights, or free flights as long as you can afford to get bumped.
The interview process for technology personnel certainly weeds out those who shouldn't be hired.
The group I was in heavily weighs fitting in with the team.

    Cons

If you want to actually work and build on your skills, this isn't the place for you. Much of your time will be spent trying to figure out how to make it look like something was done, because your manager has to show progress where none was made.
The free flights would be great, if you have time to use them. Within the group I worked it was more a case of putting out fires created by the lack of performing any actual work on the systems.
However, if your personality doesn't fit in with the team, you will likely be looking for a new position very soon.

    Advice to Management

I was unable to see above my direct manager, so I cannot provide any advice of value to senior management.

    Pros

Very impressive.... The flight attendants that came to recruit in PHX. Proffessional, big smile, make you feel welcome. Please be your self.

    Cons

It is true it is hard to get the flight attendant job. The process is long and you really have to be patient. In your heart this is what you really want.

    Advice to Management

Keep the flight attendant job selective and hired polite good manners people.
