I worked at US Airways (More than 10 years)

    Pros

As a original Piedmont pilot, and after 5 mergers, USAirways proved to be a survivor as a major US airline. My overall career throughout my 29 years was overall good.

    Cons

As a product of the USAir M & A's (USAir, Piedmont, PSA, Empire), the lost marketing leadership and suboptimal senior management led to a poorly run airline. The AWA acquisition of USAirways in 2005, further complicated and challenged how hard it is to merge different cultures, and with a cost reduction driven CEO and senior management team, this proved to be tenuous, tense, and confrontational at times as a front-line employee. The AA/USAirways merger proved that the USAirways CEO's desire to become the largest air carrier was a motive that drove every managerial, strategic decision. Today, the airline continues to struggle in areas of customer service and overall profitability.

    Advice to Management

Look at every customer service point of contact and trace how the business customer is handled, and the willingness to provide better customer service as compared to its competition.
Question why compensation has not solved, with some work groups the unhappiness and trust of its senior management team.

I worked at US Airways full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flight benefits - if you use them. Cheaper cost of living in AZ and Tempe is a great little city. Some of the other employees are fun to hang out with. US Airways has decent brand awareness in this town (keep in mind I didn't say brand equity - it's not well-liked, just well-known).

    Cons

Cheap company - you're often overworked because your department is understaffed. Upwards movement is highly political, not meritocratic - you better pucker up. This is also a company with no imagination because margins are tight and senior leadership is very cheap so only bottom-line driven decision-making has any room at the company. They don't care about the high employee turnover so your pay WILL be low.

    Advice to Management

I have no advice to give management. They need to be excised - plain and simple. Legacy airlines don't care much for their employees and they still care more than US Airways does. Doug Parker is pathetic. His legacy is meaningless and he will be remembered as such.

I worked at US Airways full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place to work, CO workers were like family, can be a rewarding position. I would recommend.
Requires hard work, the pay is good.

    Cons

Management expect more for less, the usual rat chase
The work can be repetitive and stressful, not easy meeting the dead lines.

    Pros

    Warm and family like environment.

    Cons

Too many high self-esteem individuals in the management team that made the whole system hard to work together efficiently.

I worked at US Airways full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Loved the company. Enjoyed my job and the people I worked. The company always provided challenges and it was up to you to meet them. Great benefits, pay was less but total compensation package was reasonable.

    Cons

Merger with American has caused more changes then was experienced with the AWA/US. Personnel changes and new middle management leadership decisions are not always the best thought through decisions.

    Advice to Management

I would always advice a company to lead by example as well as put yourself in your employees shoes once in a while. Keep your office door open and listen to everyone with an open mind.
