I have been working at US Army full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Steady pay. Promotions are pretty much straight forward to E4/Specialist. Promotions are really just a check in the box (non-combat mos).

    Cons

The people you have to work with. Promotions are a check in the box, this does not mean someone in your chain of command is a better leader or soldier than you.

    Advice to Management

Make promotions meaningful and promote individuals who are competent. Focus on doing several activities well than lots of them mediocre.

I worked at US Army as a contractor (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great way to earn discipline and a valuable trade. Many opportunities to expand your civilian and technical education. Great friendships and great experience.

    Cons

It's not for everybody. I wish there would be a 30 boot camp experience to see what it's about. There are some who sign a 5 year contract and soon realize that it's not for them. Toxic to the work environment.
