I worked at US Census Bureau as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There exists the potential for Census to be a successful and exciting place to work, if they would only continue the work of the CIO who left this year. Unfortunately, it seems that they started abandoning the CIO's strategies soon after he left.

    Cons

Ineffective managers at the branch and division levels are quickly undoing what the CIO had put in place because they want to do their own thing and they fail to recognize that they are out of their depth.

    Advice to Management

Stick with the last CIO's vision and strategy and do the hard work it requires. It will pay off. There is no one at Census who is better at this than the former CIO, so take advantage of what he had setup for you.

Varied experience and is never the same day, continual change.

    Cons

They operate from a place of fear and intimidation. Never cross out of the lines of the directives or use your best judgement to complete a task. It will not be tolerated.

    Advice to Management

There is great talent in the people who work there but unfortunately management does not tap into the human resource of knowledge that is underfoot.
