I worked at US Census Bureau (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great opportunity to meet people and learn and help the people in your community and surrounding areas. Paid travel (via your own car, but you get paid a small amount per mile) too..

    Cons

Poor management. Being a government company, some people really don't want to talk to you at all. Also, the bureau seems to hire anybody..this means, they may hire someone who is not the most competent.

    Advice to Management

When hiring people for management, make them go through some mock examples of what the managing job entails. I'm sure this happened, but..maybe make it more challenging?

I worked at US Census Bureau part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay was $22.25/ hour. Hours on evenings and weekends, which is OK with me. Training was competent. Supervisors were competent and considerate. Lasted for five weeks and a few days. Testing mobile apps for 2020 Census.

    Cons

It only lasted 5 weeks and a few days. You must be prepared to like dealing with strangers and persuading them to cooperate. There was no appealing most decisions by the Big Brother "Mojo" computer system who sent you out. It was more up to you, not them to decide which neighborhood apartment complexes might be too dangerous after 6 PM.

    Advice to Management

Since this was an experiment to find snafus in the system for 2016, and feedback was solicited, hopefully they will listen. Certain minor changes in deployment might have saved a lot of time and thus money, but the idea was not to apply the feed back until the end.

I have been working at US Census Bureau full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The union is strong and as a result we have generous teleworking capabilities, flexible work schedules, and a casual dress code. The building is very nice. My friends pick on me for having to work out in Suitland but I like being in a modern building, with walking paths outside, and the commute is easy.

    Cons

Even though I believe in the organization's mission, the day-to-day work I have can be mind numbing and projects often gets stalled because of communication issues. There is a surprising amount of downtime. Some people seem extremely busy, while other people like me sit around doing nothing and writing Glassdoor reviews because they're bored. It's an odd distribution of work.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to give workers feedback, even negative.

    Pros

I was my own supervisor and I could relate to the people in the neighborhood.

    Cons

I had to walk throughout the neighborhood and then walk back to the office.

    Advice to Management

    Communication is the key!

I worked at US Census Bureau part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Everyone is hired as part time. Depending on which surveys you are assigned to, you may work 3 weeks out of a month. Typically you are scheduled roughly 25 hrs each week. You are required to work either a Sat or Sun but the shifts are short like 4 hours. After about 6 months or less you are eligible for health insurance and it is great insurance. The pay is based on the federal pay scale and it is also decent.

    Cons

You can be laid off for a few weeks but if you are permanent part time you can apply for unemployment benefits.

    Advice to Management

None. I had great managers while I was employed there.

Success and High Regard by Team Leader. Expectation Shared for Longer Term Project Work.

    Cons

Lack of follow thru by Kansas City for Project Re-Hire . Veterans Status, Scored Highly for Rehire. Was let down when told that I would receive a Laptop for close demographics work, ongoing with select local families.

    Advice to Management

Attention to my skills and accomplishments as a past Enumerator.
