I have been working at US Census Bureau full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very laid back low pressure atmosphere, federal government perks and benefits, everyone has been very nice including all my superiors.

    Cons

Can be very underwhelming and even seemingly aimless at times, the pay could be better.

    Advice to Management

To exclusively hire people with relevant skills and experience for their vacancies as opposed to simply having time in a previous pay grade depending on the nature of the position.

I have been working at US Census Bureau full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I get to work on many different projects from different survey sponsors. Regular work hours and low pressure work environment.

    Cons

Limited advancement potential unless you want to supervise a large number of people. Also if you have math background you'll need to seek out interesting work to exercise those skills.

    Advice to Management

Raise pay rates or you won't be able to compete with private sector opportunities. Additionally or alternatively, force offices to permit flexible telework arrangements (including full time).

I have been working at US Census Bureau part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Office environment.
    Laid back culture.
    Solid base pay.
You get to work in the city acquire transferable skills.

    Cons

    Slow
    Boring
    Directionless
No competition, drive, or goals to speak of.
Supervisors neglect to train clerks leaving us in the dark when respondants or potential employees ask hard questions. Hard to move from part time to full time. Hard to find a purpose in what you're doing. You wonder if half of these jobs even need to exist or if they can't be done by interns.

    Advice to Management

Let us in deeper. I have worked here for a year and as much as you insist that our work is important, i don't see it. What are our goals? How do our systems work?

    Pros

The hourly rate is good for going unit to unit and surveying people.
It's good if you don't mind some people's attitudes.

    Cons

Can be bad depending on the weather.
If you're not on a survey that is mandatory you'll be met with refusals.

I worked at US Census Bureau part-time

    Pros

The training was sort of interesting, and I did get a snapshot of how the ground floor of a governmental agency works...or doesn't.

    Cons

I went through the 4 day training and was chosen--by post-training test scores, etc.-- to lead a group of census takers through the whole process. I told the trainer that I had scheduled a trip to see my kids months before, that would force me to miss the very first day (we hadn't been told the date until the end of the training). In addition,, I was given a "co" who was trained with me, & who was more than willing to work with the group for the one day. In addition, there was going to be a couple weeks before the group would get started, during which my co and I were supposed to get absolutely everything set up, discussed, and ready to roll. The trainer had really wanted me for the position and thought we had a great plan. However...his supervisor came at the end to see how we had scored, and to speak with us. When she heard I wouldn't be there the first day as "leader," she told me, "Oh, then you can't do it. You have to do it exactly as you're expected to do it." Straight government type!! And that was it!

    Advice to Management

You want good, strong, efficient, reliable employees? Hire them!
