I have been working at US Census Bureau full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay (after about 2-4 years and if you try to advance)
    Good benefits
Relaxed work environment (not always true, but is for me)
    Telework - up to 80%
    Flexible work schedules
Paid training both on and off site
They will pay for advanced degrees through JPSM (Master's and PhD, and this always depends on budget)

    Cons

You need to pick the correct path for yourself or you might be unhappy. However, there are plenty of opportunities for advancement or lateral changes.
I have heard rumors of cliques, but that happens less with math stats

I worked at US Census Bureau full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This is the primary data collection agency for most of the federal surveys you read about in the news. Once you know the lay of the land, and where to look for answers, you can get work done here. You can also just keep your head down and only do the tasks that are given to you by your direct supervisor. That seems to be the way most people do it.

    Cons

It's a HUGE agency with about 6000 people under one roof, and another 6000 in their field offices. Between the ongoing surveys, the American Community Survey, and the Census count every 10 years, it's a busy place. Some people work across efforts, but most people work on just a few, and as a result "they know what they know." It was always hard to find a clear answer to things that seemed like they were basic agency policy questions. People would regularly claim there was a rule that turned out to not exist, or not exist as they claimed. They were trying to put more things online so staff could get quick/clear answers, so maybe it's different now. But it was a rumor mill when I was there.

    Advice to Management

Make sure you remind middle management to encourage junior staff to to take initiative and do interesting work, particularly when it has cost-saving implications for the Bureau. Some are already good at this, but some career managers there only understand doing work that comes to them in a top-down fashion. Get them to see the value and talent that comes from the bottom up, too (but is often missed).

I worked at US Census Bureau (Less than a year)

    Pros

Real projects, good experience, good benefits, regular hours, friendly culture, great cafeteria food

    Cons

Needed to utilize peers for training as managers were very busy/overbooked
Some older, middle-aged employees seemed disgruntled about careers in government/at Census
