I worked at US Coast Guard full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Fun Job, extremely rewarding opportunities about 60% of the work force are absolutely incredible people. I can never discredit the CG for how I have traveled and the people I have met.

    Cons

    Extremely over worked
    very underpaid
    zero appreciation/recognition at most units
They own you and have the ability to completely ruin your life at the drop of a dime.
    Leadership has gone down hill.
    Advancement opportunities are a joke.
Training received doesn't correlate to civilian life and is ultimately worthless.

I wish I could speak with you face to face...

    Advice to Management

    Retire.

    This does no justice,

I worked at US Coast Guard full-time

    Pros

Pay arrives on time. If you don't like working hard its the place for you.

    Cons

Poor place to work especially if your a contractor or veteran of the other services.
Extremely inefficient , worst I have seen in an other military branch. GS employees do
not have the decision making authority of their grades. Reprisal is present and ignored.

    Advice to Management

    Clean up your act.

I worked at US Coast Guard (Less than a year)

    Pros

My time working there was brief (thank goodness) but, the building is nicely outfitted.

    Cons

There are no ways other than the bus to get there unless, you arrive prior to 5:30am. Either way, I had a mile walk to my office. There are no restaurants nearby other than their cafeteria which didn't have that much to offer.

    Advice to Management

Train your Feds to treat contract staff as they would like to be treated. If you were not in the CG or Navy, it is likely somewhat challenging to learn your upside down elevator system. It's a building not a ship, consider changing that now that you're back on dry land.

    Pros

The new GI Bill allows you to get a college degree without incurring student debt.

    Cons

Too much politics and infighting with zero knowledge of managerial concepts.

    Advice to Management

As rank places you in management positions, study business tactics to ensure proper leadership skills

I worked at US Coast Guard as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good training programs if you fit the mold they want. Decent paycheck. Great career as long as you stay single and have a PHD in ass-kissing.

    Cons

If you don't fit into the mold they want, you're toast. If your station only has boatswains and mechanics, but you're more of a computer tech, showing any interest in something outside that base will get your career torpedoed before you can even get started. Medical benefits are a pain to work with if you're married. High rank officers think they walk on water. Forget trying to use your GI bill while active duty, it won't happen. They will drain you of any patriotism you have, wring all the use out of you, and then cut you loose once you are no longer useful.

    Advice to Management

Try taking care of your people instead of spending all your time trying to look good.

    Pros

Touring the world on the governments dime. The post 911 g ibill.

    Cons

Its just a job THAT OWNS YOU!!!... poor salary pay for the hours you work and the time your away, no full retirment, heath care that dosn't want to pay for anything but 500 Mg ibprohen, no advancement, the complet sloths and D-bags you work with, the "racial diversity" the coast guard crams down you throat, and the don't ask dont tell that was repealed and the firey hoops you had to jump through on a daily basis just to do your job.

    Advice to Management

Quit micromanaging and trying to justify your job and proove who has the biggest swinging wang, whe understand your our boss you dont have to put us down.
