I worked at US Coast Guard (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed traveling and protecting my country.

    Cons

I understood the importance of rank and respected it however there were some who felt because you were under them that they were better than you in every way and they could treat you however they wished.

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Humanitarian Service
The Coast Guard is always operational, whether it is stopping drug runners, rescuing a stranded sailor or breaking ice in the Great Lakes Coast Guard members are doing something.
Benefits are great. Untaxed housing allowance, Tuition Assistance and the GI Bill, full medical coverage.
We are a small service therefore the chances of working with people you know or previously worked with is very likely
You will work with a lot of fun and incredibly talented and educated people.

    Cons

Being a small service also has a lot of cons. Like a small school word travels fast, so the rumor mill is an epidemic.
Like all government and military jobs there is a lot of bureaucracy and can get very frustrating. It is very hit or miss on how much you are affected by this but generally the larger the unit the more there is.
Outdated technology and assets. Our oldest cutters are 30+ years old.
Work like balance is also hit or miss. If you are on a cutter you could be away for six-eight months out of the year.
The Coast Guard budget is always a joke and we always get left behind compared to the other services.
Officer Evaluation system is still flawed and your career can be affected by one bad supervisor.

    Advice to Management

Senior leaders always say that the junior members are the future of the service but never treat us like we are. Give the junior officers a voice and you will have a much more motivated work force.

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and compensation. There can be significant opportunities for technical training. In general, great camaraderie with co-workers.

    Cons

Requires moving every 2-4 years; may require moves to undesirable locations. Promotes "Coast Guard family," yet often does not follow own policy for members with special needs dependents or co-location of married member to member.

    Advice to Management

Stop moving talented members to terrible locations. Stop promoting "yes" people.

I worked at US Coast Guard (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Laidback environment, boss did not care if you came in a few minutes late (especially considering the traffic around DC)
    -Great, friendly, and interesting coworkers

    Cons

-Ridiculous level of bureaucratic red tape, took me three weeks to get computer access
-I was never given any clear duties

    Advice to Management

Streamline the process for short-term workers (aka interns) to get computer access. When I arrived, I was signing forms that I could have signed before my first day.
