I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I absolutely loved my time within the US Coast Guard. For a woman, it is the one military branch that allows females to do any job so long as they meet the standardized requirements for everyone. There are very few places where the mission can mean more when every mission is about providing your country directly with a service. The education benefits are also excellent!

    Cons

It’s the military, and that means the needs of the service comes first. While you have input on where you may go, it doesn’t mean that you will get it. Also it can make long term goals external to the military (school, professional development, etc) difficult to achieve.

    Advice to Management

Lack of personnel can make life very difficult

    Pros

Great mission, lots of autonomy along with high expectations from both the organization and the public. Small community promotes cohesiveness and trust. Great Americans doing the king's work!

    Cons

Typical gov't bureaucratic bs...no raises, tight budgets, little HR support for civilians. Always doing "more with less".

I worked at US Coast Guard full-time

    Pros

Great work environment. On the job training with ability to learn many skills. Great staff who supports your development. Free college. Benefits are great.

    Cons

The pay is menial for the amount of work done. Travel can be a pro or con depending on your preferences. Your station will not be near your hometown.

    Advice to Management

Great environment for the young kids first getting in. Keep jobs doable for under-skilled seaman coming in. Free time in between trips is key.

I worked at US Coast Guard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Amazing benefits, quick advancement depending on what career track you are on, above average pay due to allowances that other branches try to avoid. The other branches have large bases and barracks, the Coast Guard does not. If you are stationed ashore, you will most likely be given BAH (basic allowance for housing) which is a variable rate determined by the DOD and is dependent on your location. This rate can be looked up online. Additionally, if you are stationed in a location with a high cost of living, you will also receive COLA (cost of living allowance) which is another variable DOD rate that can be looked up by zip code. I was stationed in Alaska and within 2 years of being in the Coast Guard I was being paid $60k.

    Cons

Like most large organizations, some politics must be played to advance. Also, if your career track is congested with people, you likely will not advance very quickly. I was an Operations Specialist and advanced from E3 to E5 within 2 years. Many people with different ratings remain an E4 for 5 or 6 years.

    Advice to Management

Weigh job performance more heavily when advancing. Currently, it is weighted by awards received, time served, sea time served, and others. Trouble is, the awards received are too dependent on your supervisor's willingness to issue awards. Either start issuing more awards, or start weighing another measure. Maybe STAN results or something similar.
