Risk aversive organization with limited management and leadership competence.

Dec 9, 2015 - Director in Washington, DC

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great mission. Facilitating safe travel and economic development is absolutely necessary. Purpose can easily be extracted in defense of our nation.

    Cons

Bureaucratic and 'old-boys' club culture. Very stratified. Commitment to the mission is evident in the 'field' but is lip service at the leadership level where competition for position and power is evident. The mission is affected by the lack of collaboration between CBP and other DHS organization's.

    Great mission...

    Pros

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is a great place to serve the American people. Whether you are supporting the frontline officers and agents or working to create more efficient and effective tools to use on the borders or in the airports, CBP has a place for you to contribute in a meaningful way. Care to move around and try new things, it can be done if you are a top performer.

    Cons

Senior leadership is not consistently on the same page as CBP faces a multitude of security and monetary challenges over the prior few years. More and more leaders seems to be 'seeing the light' recently, but it will take some time before everyone is on the same page strategically speaking.

    Fulfilling experience with inadequate management

    Pros

Once you are assigned a task, you get the opportunity to run with it and solve the problem your own way. Able to interact with individuals from various agencies and stake-holders giving you additional perspective and career enrichment.

    Cons

Management has no idea what they are doing or what the issues are. I would even go so far as to say that some leadership has no idea what their employees even do.

    Welcome to bureaucracy!

    Pros

Within my division, I am appreciated for my work, I am given some decent level of work/life balance and I am able to put my ideas forward without fear of reprisal.

    Cons

The overall senior leadership could benefit from a course in open communication, if such a course exists. Leaders are not as engaged as is necessary to get the most out of their employees. Most of the senior leaders are afraid of their own leaders. Their direction to us is based on that fear - not truly free to think on their own.

Not the right organization to work for when looking to make a difference.

May 10, 2017 - Program and Management Analyst in Indianapolis, IN
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The work you do is mission oriented and you can appreciate how the project/program you are delivering serves to help safeguard our nation's borders. The work/life balance is the only strongest upside to working for this organization.

    Cons

There is no clear career path and promotion opportunities are very limited. Leadership do not take the time to recognize employee excellence and provide opportunity for team or individual success.
