I have been working at US Defense Security Service full-time

    Pros

This is a typical DoD Agency, on the small side with less than 900 total employees. There are field offices throughout the country so if someone wants to move to a different part of the country and a position is open, they can apply for it.
Being a federal agency, there are many benefits such as multiple health care plans to choose from, life insurance, etc.

    Cons

A lot of poor supervisors who drag down morale and then wonder why people leave. Too many supervisors are micro managers and don't let their people develop which is a source of frustration. This agency also tends to hire at lower grades (7-9) and don't offer recruitment incentives other agencies don't even blink at, such as sign-on bonus, paying student loans, etc. Apparently this is some kind of unwritten rule as other agencies will take a potential hire, offer a recruitment incentive and this agency loses that person.

    Advice to Management

This agency would do well to look at offering recruitment incentives when trying to hire along with revamping how and who are moved into supervisory positions. Poor first-level supervisors drag down morale and efficiencies and lead employees to go elsewhere simply to get away with their sanity in place.

    Pros

There is a twenty word minimum for this section. There arent enough pros to make 20 words. The main pros are seen in the industrial security representatives field.

    Cons

Management, Empire Building, No internal collaboration, computers and network are horrible, toxic interoffice relationships, mission comes second to ego and power.

    Advice to Management

    DSS Management doesnt take advice.

    Cons

Bureaucracy is dysfunctional at times. Agency currently having an identity crisis regarding its role and place in DoD in the future.

    Advice to Management

Lack of leaders in mid to upper level positions.

I worked at US Defense Security Service (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This federal agency operates with a small business mentality. This is a great agency to work for if you want to have someone "have your back" but that someone is low ethics.

    Cons

In 19 years of working in IT, I have never seen office politics as severe with any employer other than DSS. The ethics of leadership with OCIO, IA, N&I are questionable.

    Advice to Management

Remove unthical leadership. Promote from outside of the agency. If one of your employees who is in good standing needs to take an extended break in employment (beyond 3 months), place them on paid Admin leave if possible. Work to retain your workforce.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at US Defense Security Service (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers, positive energy on projects until leadership gets involved, decent facility and hours, easy going support staff who bond on issues that everyone sees. Extra hours not common or expected. Great training options for those looking to expand skills and leave.

    Cons

Senior management living in a fantasy world of self-importance. Integrity not present in most executives, and problem personnel are rarely dealt with (so agency leadership doesn't become aware of issues). Management taking personal credit for everything positive that happens and blaming staff for negative things is the culture.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the people that work hard and don't spend their days schmoozing. They are the next generation of leaders. Quit hiring your buddies from the intel community; there's more to DSS than counterintelligence. Don't watch quality staff walk out the door and wonder what the problem is. You're it. Have you noticed a pattern lately?
