I worked at US Department of Defense full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

No shortage of work for someone willing to step out of their lane a bit. If you're willing to learn a little bit about the disciplines and focus areas that touch yours and build those relationships in the building there is no end to the high-quality work you can produce. If customer engagement is your forte then you'll find no shortage of combat units, intelligence organizations, and policy makers reaching out for more information and in turn they will write the letters and recommendations you need to progress. If you enjoy travelling it doesn't take much to become a unit's "go-to-guy" and get invited to workshops, conferences, and special events funded by the customer organization.

    Cons

NASIC is an organization of specialists. While many subject areas touch each other there is a strong "stay in your lane" mentality. There is often good reason for this as someone with the depth of knowledge that the expert possesses may misrepresent information or lack the most up-to-date data on ongoing projects. There is a tendency for this to lead to information stovepipes and/or a single busy (or disinterested) analyst/manager/supervisor can derail an entire project. There is also a tendency to focus on funneling information upward to policy makers while eschewing tasks to funnel information downward to military units.

    Advice to Management

Find creative ways to give and get credit for analysts working the "small" problems as well as the big ones.

Benefits are great, sick time is separate from vacation, veterans buy back their time with military put towards retirement.

    Cons

No way to advance until you want to go into management. They are open to changes or trying new things. Everything is built on Microsoft, you try to bring open source technology into the shop and they grt scared of change. Everyone wants to juat do an average job and retire someday.
